Product Description:
Everyone knows how Kal-El—Superman—was sent to Earth just before his planet exploded. But what led to such a disaster? Now, in The Last Days of Krypton, Kevin J. Anderson presents a sweeping tale of the pomp and grandeur, the intrigue and passion, and the politics and betrayals of a doomed world filled with brave heroes and cruel traitors.
Against the spectacular backdrop of Krypton's waning halcyon days, there is the courtship and marriage of Kal-El's parents, the brilliant scientist Jor-El and his historian wife, Lara. Together they fight to convince a stagnant, disbelieving society that their world is about to end. Jor-El's brother, Zor-El, leader of the fabled Argo City, joins the struggle not only to save the planet but also to fight against the menace of the ruthless and cunning General Zod.
The diabolical Zod, future archenemy of Superman, avails himself of a golden opportunity to seize power when the android Brainiac captures the capital city of Kandor. As Zod's grip on the populace tightens and his power grows, he too is blind to all the signs that point to the death of the very civilization he is trying to rule.
Through all of this, Jor-El and Lara's love for each other, their history, and their son allows for Krypton to live on even as the planet is torn apart around them. For in the escape of their baby lies Krypton's greatest gift—and Earth's greatest hero.
The Last Days of Krypton is a timeless, ground-breaking exploration of a world that has never been fully defined, and reveals the extraordinary origins of a legend that has never ceased to amaze and astound generation after generation.

I picked this up the other day to read on a plane trip over the holidays. I've been a Superman fan since the early 70's as well as an avid Superman comic book collector in the 80's and 90's. And I had read some of Kevin Anderson's Star Wars books so I was keen to read it. I found the book quite interesting and it definitely kept my attention. I enjoyed discovering Zod's history and motivation and learning more about life on Krypton. Kal-El was lucky to get off that planet... even if it had survived ... Read More

This book takes place about 2 years before the birth of Superman, a.k.a. Kal-el. We follow Jor-el and Lara (Kal-el's parents); Zor-el (brother to Jor-el); and General Zod, Aethyr and Nam-Ek (the main bad guys). It tells a story about people trying to survives through great crisis. I had not really read many comicbook-based novel, so this was new to me.
The flow of the book moves smoothly through each of the chapters, which are short but have a lot of action throughout. The characters are ... Read More

This is a truly lousy book, even for a Young Adult title. The dialog is stilted, the narration extremely repetitive, the plot and characters uninteresting and illogical. But it's a must read for baby boomers like myself who grew up modeling their lives after Superman. You know, save lives, be a good person, learn to fly. Many in the boomer years who entered either the various medical or police professions, and who became licensed pilots, did so, at least in part, because they admired Superman, Superboy, ... Read More

I thought the book was very well written. I loved the way Kevin was able to tie together all the loose ends I'd seen in movies and read in books. I thought his explanation as to what actually destroyed Krypton was great.

The cover illustration here simply doesn't give the laser spandex cover thingy justice! This book literally sucked my eyes from my head from across an entire bookstore when I was back in the States recently. My GAWD, it's fantastic!
Drawn to it as I was (and to all of Kevin's books, many of which were there on the shelves, unsold), I picked it up and...I LITERALLY COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! It melded into the flesh of my hands and I HAD to read it.
THIS IS WITHOUT DOUBT KEVIN'S BEST ... Read More
