This is what comic books are and (sadly, today) what they used to be. Berni Wrightson's artwork is incomparable; he, more than Wein even, is the true creator of the Swamp Thing image that all classic comic book fans know and love. Swamp Thing is a great character who works splendidly on a visual level but never seems to get the treatment that he deserves. This collection comes as close as anything can to capturing the real ideas behind this brilliant character. Maybe he's a bit gross and strange ... Read More

I've been a fan of the Swamp Thing character since 1984 when Alan Moore took over as writer of the flagging series. I'm not sure what motivated me to buy a comic in a genre for which I generally had no interest but I was immediately hooked. Although Moore's tenure remains the Swamp Thing pinnacle the comic actually started improving a few issues prior to his writing and lost steam well before he moved on to other projects. I had been looking for sometime for the complete story of the early Swamp Thing comicbook run #1=10. Roots Of The Swamp Thing is just that and more. With a great dust jacket featuring one of my favorite covers from Swamp Thing #9, this book has the original 10 stories all reproduced on quality stock I might add but also the original first appearance and storyline from The House Of Secrets #92. The story telling by Len Wein is well written, venturing from dark and macabre, to lighthearted and sympathetic. ... Read More

This book is an entry in the DC Comics Classics Library series. It's a 320 page, 7" x 10-1/2" hardcover. It reprints the original Swamp Thing story from House of Secrets #92 and the first 13 issues of the Swamp Thing comic book.
Reproduction by and large is outstanding. The paper stock is reminiscent of comic book newsprint but much superior. The only complaint is that many of the issues originally had teasers on the last page with art which are *not* reprinted here. Perhaps it was felt they ... Read More

Almost 7 years ago, I wrote a review of the newly-released trade paperback SWAMP THING: DARK GENESIS, which reprinted Len Wein and Berni Wrightson's classic stories from House of Secrets #92 and Swamp Thing #1-10. In the wake of Alan Moore's stunning mid-'80s retcon of DC's muck monster, the original series from the early '70s had seemingly been forgotten, so it was nice to see those stories finally being collected. Unfortunately, the remainder of the original series was left on the shelf. I began to wonder: ... Read More
