Product Description:
Indiana, 1862. Quakers Jess and Eliza Birdwell (Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire) live on their family farm. There are only minor ruffles in their quiet life--youngest son, Little Jess, has a running battle with the pet goose, Samantha; Eliza disapproves when Jess turns their weekly buggy ride to worship into a race with neighbor Sam Jordan (Robert Middleton). But the Civil War threatens their calm. Will the Quaker men defend themselves against the invading Confederate Army? Their oldest son, Josh (Anthony Perkins), is torn between beliefs and desires. And what will Jess do when put to the test?

This has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in the theatre as a girl (giving away my age). I have never found a wrong step. Nothing jars or distracts from the joy and sorrow. I have seen this movie innumerable times and still enjoy it every time I watch it. The story of a Quaker family living during the Civil War is beautifully told plus the photography is wonderful. I recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys movies that tells stories in a beautiful way.

Gary Cooper played some of his best acting performances in the '50s. "Friendly Persuasion" is one. His co-stars were impressive as well, especially Dorothy McGuire. Don't be turned-off because it's Family-friendly. There is comedy and drama surrounding the story of a Quaker Farmer and his Family having to confront the American Civil War literally brought to thier doorstep in Pennsylvania. Pat Boone had a tremendously popular hit with the title song too. William Wyler directed many wonderful movies and ... Read More

Excellent movie. It show the conflict over fighting to protect your property versus your religion and how a a strong man handled the conflict. Quite a bit of humor spices up an already good movie. Gary Cooper is at his best, Anthony Perkins show how good of an actor he is, and Dorothy McGuire shows how a preacher and mother deals with the same issues of religion and life. Watch the duck and the boy--hilarious.
