Amazon.com's Best of 2001:
Jude Christodal could be one of those movie boys who write and record songs for the objects of their crushes or romantic losses. This follow-up to his 1998 debut on Madonna's Maverick label, No One Is Really Beautiful, finds Jude placing his sweet sentiments in a finely crafted California-pop sound whose carefree edge makes it easy to believe the CD booklet's claim that it was all recorded in two weeks. Unaffected enough to cover Bread's heartbroken "Everything I Own," he also makes his originals resonate for those passed high school--even when extolling the benefits of a "Teenage Girlfriend" ("met her at the mall") or the charms of a "Not So Pretty Princess." By turns pained and joyful, but never puppyish, King of Yesterday opens a unique singer-songwriter's window on innocence and experience. --Rickey Wright

Noone is really beautiful quickly became one of my favourite disks of all time. This one unfortunately became instantly one of the worst. So bad in fact I felt upset to have paid for it. So I binned it.
Jude can and does do much better than this.

A must own if for no other reason than the song "Indian Lover"-- Jude put this cd out as a last ditch effort to win over label support by producing a 'sellable' disk. He did. Although a bit too poppy at times for my taste, this is a great addition for those of you who already own "noone's really beautiful" Other than Martin Sexton and Ray Lamontagne, there is no better male voice I've found who is still alive and making great music today!!!

yes i know it was recorded in a rush. but..."indian lover" and "i will not die" were both previously released. "i do" appears here for the THIRD time on a jude lp. shall i go on? "everything i own" is a cover. "the not so pretty princess" is a cute song, but it's basically a retread of "i'm sorry now" from the last album. "teenage girlfriend" is the worst song released by a once-promising musician since the gin blossoms put out "my car" in the post-doug hopkins years. ugh.
