Album Description:
Once again centered around the concepts of Oystein G. Brun, the latest Borknagar album marks the band's strongest and most talented lineup yet. Bringing aboard multi-talented vocalist Vintersorg and Emperor live bassist Tyr, Borknagar's new brain trust offers Empiricism, the most expansive and organic record of their career. (Century Media)

My introduction to Borknagar was this 2001 release by Century Media. I had heard Vintersorg's vocals before with his own band, but I was immediately blown away by his performance here. While many have referred to Borknagar as black metal, it is hard to really put this band in that category. Borknagar have many elements in their music and Vintersorg's screams only seem to fit in the black metal category. His clean vocals are heavenly and extraordinary.
'The Genuine Pulse' is a great opener ... Read More

Counting their self titled initial release on Malicious Records, "Empiricism" is the fifth offering from Borknagar, a band that originally started as a super-group of members from black metal giants such as Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, and Ulver. Although many of these members were no longer with Borknagar by the time Empiricism was recorded, it still manages to boast stellar musicianship and composition. Like many groups in this branch of metal, Borknagar has decided that making their name completely ... Read More

I bought this album when it first came out and still listen to it. The first time I heard them I was on their web site and got a sample of Genuine Pulse. It impressed me enough to buy the CD. The best way I can describe it is symphonic black metal. Somewhere someone may have broken it down to something a little different, but that is MY description.
The music is heavy on keyboards with strong guitar background. The lyrics seem mystical, dark, and beautiful. I guess they are lyric poetry set to very ... Read More

I suppose I'm a bit of a late-comer into all this... this is the first Borknagar release I've bought, and only a few months ago at that (and the only one so far, though I'm thinking this will be rectified soon). This CD needs time to sink in, as it takes multiple listens to build an appreciation for it. The opening of "The Genuine Pulse" was challenging for me at first. The frenetic drumming and Vintersorg's growls over a lovely little folkish melody (a flute, I think?) seemed strange and disjointed to me--for ... Read More

After 3 superb albums (The Olden Domain, The Archaic Course, Quintessence) you'd think that Borknagar would be ready with another outstanding performance.
Unfortunately this is not so.
A bunch of lineup changes seem to have weakened the band. Immediately noticible is that Vortex is gone along with his trademarked crazy vocal stunts, and replaced by this guy Vintersong. He's not a bad singer, and none of the band members are bad, it's just that the songs aren't there.
Before you conclude that I hate ... Read More
