J.R. Richards's tenor voice oscillates between the silky ease of one who knows the girls in the audience will be drying their eyes and the disgruntled ache of a teenager who's just been grounded. He plays both of these aspects well throughout Opaline, lending his voice greater versatility than it may actually possess. Though they often drift pleasantly, Richards's lyrics are never vague--they state with straightforward eloquence that this whole "life" thing is not easy, just worth it. The music complements the vocal work simply and well, creating an overall sound for Dishwalla that seems refreshed and reinvigorated rather than new or different. Do not expect flashy and surprising new musical work, but if you liked Dishwalla before--even if you never admitted it but secretly did--nothing here will disappoint. --Mark Huntsman

funny, i always recommend this album to friends (although most of them refuse because of fear of the unknown), and i would say it is in my top 10 albums ever, alongside silverchair's diorama, the used's self-titled first album, and 8 stops 7's in moderation to name a few. all the songs are very melodic and it's a beautiful album to listen to no matter what you are doing. my favorite song by far is "drawn out."

Dishwalla has to be one of the most underrated alternative rock bands in the US. Their hits "Counting Blue Cars" & "Charlie Brown's Parents" were great songs but not, imo, representative of the kind of artistry & depth I'm hearing in Opaline.
Most CDs have dead tracks - tracks that don't make my listening cut, tracks that are boring. Opaline doesn't just NOT have any dead tracks - ever single track is actually gorgeous, beautiful, magic. There are very few CDs that have impressed ... Read More

As good as some of their earlier albums. I know it's not new, but I didn't have the possibility to buy until now. You now, Dishwalla are not that big outside US, so I (livining in Sweden) didn't know it existed until I did some random web-searching some time ago. I've been in love with their music ever since my time in the US (studying). I'm glad that they are still going strong!

All Dishwalla CD's have some great tunes, but this is their best work so far. The only semi-single is "Somewhere in the Middle," which is a great tune, but there are many others that blow it away. "Angels or Devils" may be one of the greatest musical secrets of all time.

Dishwalla is quite big in the Philippines, but what prevents this band being great is the availablity of their stuff. My first sampling of this band, was of course counting blue cars. there are only about 2 or 3 radio stations in metro manila playing their stuff, and particularly one station klite1035 played stuff from this album in fairly good rotation. songs like every little thing, somewhere in the middle, angels and devils kept playing in my mind. and i said to myself, i gotta have this album ...
