Based on Carl Hiaasen's very cool young-adult novel of the same title, Hoot tells of a teen boy suddenly plunged into the wacky world of endangered species and Florida shenanigans. Jimmy Buffett contributes five new songs to the soundtrack, which isn't all that surprising since he coproduced the movie and his daughter Savannah Jane is credited as music supervisor. The best of his efforts are "Barefootin'," a honky-tonkin' duet with Alan Jackson, and a faithful cover of Warren Zevon¹s classic "Werewolves of London." The balance of the songs on the CD are nicely laid -back, particularly G. Love's "Back of the Bus" and Maroon 5's cover of Bill Withers's "Lovely Day" (Withers contributes background vocals, though this doesn't necessarily play in favor of Maroon 5's singer, Adam Levine). Newcomer Brie Larson (who also costars in the movie) contributes a potential hit with "Coming Around," which sounds like a gushy teen-pop take on Sheryl Crow (yes, it's a compliment). The most exciting track on the CD, however, is Toots and the Maytals' funk-reggae hybrid "Funky Kingston," and it's from 1973. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Jimmy Buffett recorded a variety of songs for this CD, including a duet with Allen Jackson of the classic hit "Barefootin," some great covers: Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Bruce Cockburn's "Wondering Where The Lions Are," a new version of his own "Floridays" and an original tune "Good Guys Win," written especially for the movie by long time Buffett songwriting partners Coral Reefers, Mac McAnally, and Roger Guth.
Maroon 5, Toots and the Maytals, G Love And Special Sauce and Brie Larson, among others also contribute tracks.

Who would have expected the soundtrack for a kids movie to be this good? I originally purchased it for Maroon 5/Bill Withers version of "Lovely Day" and Jimmy Buffett's Floridays, but have really enjoyed the different types of music that music supervisor Savannah Jane Buffett has put together. Parrott Heads have plenty to enjoy on this disc too, with "Wondering Where The Lions Are", "Good Guys Win", "Barefootin'" (with Alan Jackson) and Jimmy's cover of the Warren Zevon classic "Werewolves Of London". ... Says it all. Has Jimmy gone The John Denver route? Many people may have purchased this thinking they were getting some Buffet and Buffet-type tracks, but it IS a sound track and I guess I shoulda' known.

I'm not usually too interested in soundtracks, but I was in the store today and this one was playing on the overhead. When i heard the wonderful rendition of Bruce Cockburn's Wondering Where the Lions Are I had to have it. As the day has gone on the soundtrack as a whole has proved to be a great buy.
The Maroon 5/Bill Withers cover of Lovely Day is grand, and Floridays is an improvement on the original. Brie Larson's Coming Around is a nice bit of pop and Toots and the Maytals Funky Kingston ... Read More

Really enjoyed "Hoot" and the soundtrack keeps up with the high-spirited fun. Plus, I think all the music from the film was there. We've got some classic Buffett "Floridays" and a wonderful cover of Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London." I especially like the version of "Lovely Day" and "Good Guys Win."

Very nice soundtrack, featuring some excellent covers and several originals. Jimmy's new song "Good Guys Win" is destined for the Billboard Charts. As usual the Coral Reefer Band is in fine form here and Fingers Taylor even re-emerges on a couple of songs. (Although CA harmonica ace Tom Ball also kicks butt on "Happy Ending.") Sonny Landreth plays a mean slide. Good music for driving, boating, BBQing and/or just hanging. Now pardon me while I pour myself a tall, cold one.
