A Whangdoodle is a "fanciful creature of undefined nature," which was also once the wisest, kindest, most fun-loving living thing in the world. That is, until people stopped believing in it. When people no longer believe in the whangdoodle, the the last of the really great Whangdoodles created an enchanted land full of extraordinary creatures from furry Flukes to sly Splintercats to marvelous Whiffle Birds. In the book, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, a professor, the last adult who believes in the whangdoodle, teams up with three children to undertake a journey into Whangdoodleland. The journey though is only possible if everyone involved believes everything they see is real. If they stop believing, they'll be lost and Whangdoodleland will be lost to them. This book teaches the importance of exercising one's imagination and the 30th anniversary edition is exceptionally well done.
The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is a great book for anyone who loves magical journeys into wondrous places. I haven't had this much fun reading a book since Robert Stanek's Journey Beyond the Beyond.

I read this back when it first came out, in the 1970s. It is a great book, with fully developed characters and fanciful creatures. I also recommend Julie (andrews) Edwards other book, Mandy, which I also read back in the day. It's probably available on this site. Mandy would appeal to girls, mostly, as it's about an orphan girl who discovers a cute little house that she adopts as a place of her own. It's sort of like The Secret Garden, but more updated than that book set during the war.

I am a teacher in an elementary school (mid to low level income) on Long Island, in New York. I read this book during our read-aloud times with my current 3rd grade students. This book is so enjoyable for all ages. Since there are no illustrations my students are able dive into their own imaginations to create a sketch of what has happened in the story. I use this story for mental imagery as well as vocabulary. I used the chapter where Professor Savant talks about his 3 favorite words, as a springboard for us to talk about our 3 favorite words and the images and feelings those words create for us. I could go on and on about this book, but I have to get back to the High-Behind Splintered Cat and Lindy.
