I guess I'm the only one egg-headed enough to notice that this is the most American of the Chronicles, with a reason. Two protagonists flee NORTH to freedom. Sounds like Huckleberry Finn to me. A dash of Prince & The Pauper when Shasta is confused with his brother, voila!, looks like Lewis was reading AMERICAN children's books to get some ideas. And why not, his wife was a very American girl, A LOT LIKE Aravis, wouldn't you say? In fact, the dialogue between Aravis and her girlfriend sounds almost like something out of Henry James.....
Amazing, isn't it, that all the brilliant Lewis scholars don't catch any of this. But hey, Lewis scholarship is so lame and degraded that the publisher can get away with repackaging all the books and renumbering them for NO GOOD ACADEMIC REASON at all. I think the renumbering scam is all about making windfall profits, but that's another story. At least Aslan hasn't become a TV pitchman for children's products...yet...

CS Lewis tells a good story in a sketch like sort of way. Tolkien has way of creating a three dimensional world where the reader feels actively involved and can make intelligent predictions and take part. This book is not that involving but the basic story line is good.

Queen of the Apostles #34
Here are some of the greatest characters in the world. Their names are Shasta, Bree, Aravis, Hwin and Arsheesh. Shasta was an adopted child raised by the meanest fisherman named Arsheesh. Shasta ran away and than the greatest adventure began. In the middle of the book there is a wild chase from a lion and Shasta meets an unexpected person. At the end of the book, there is a surprise waiting for you once you read the book. Some quotes are," Be quiet youngster you are spoiling the story." Another one is," All his cats are dashing out from the line." One last one is," Friends we are in Archenland."
Shasta is a brave boy who enjoys adventures and will face danger eye to eye. Bree a horse is a warhorse and has a gift horses do not have. Hwin a horse is a horse owned by Aravis. Hwin has a surprise as well. Aravis is a brave tarkeena and will take pain for someone else. She is also a great horse rider. Last but not least is Arsheesh. Arsheesh is a mean fisherman that will take things out on Shasta if something bad happens to him.
The story takes place from the city of Tashbaan all the way to the Castle in Anvard. This book is a fiction and adventure book. Some good things the author did were putting in a lot of information so that the reader will understand the story much better. The problem and theme of the book was for Shasta and Aravis to save Anvard with a... you will find out if you read the book.
I think a fifth grader could read this book because of gore and violence. You also have to remember things and pay attention.
If you like other books written by C.S., Lewis you will love the Horse and His Boy. Comparing this book to other books of the same genre this book is by far the best book ever. It has scenes that will puzzle you. Her books stand out more than anyone else's. C.S., Lewis loves to use a lot of detail.
It was a great book to read. Everything C.S., Lewis did was a great way to make a great book. With this book you have to pace yourself. This is what I did. There is a lot of information to memorize that is why you should pace yourself. The beginning of the book was grabbing and the conclusion was great but to find out what happens you have to read the book.
I give this book a 5 out of 5 star rating.

I re-read this along with the rest of the series after having read them several times as a kid. They're definitely for kids, but still fun to read as an adult especially being able to remember reading them as a kid.
This book was probably my favorite when I read them as a kid. I don't think that's true anymore, but it was still a very good story. All the new characters are very good, and it's particularly interesting to see a brief glimpse of Narnia as it was when ruled by the kids from the first book. The plot is also very good, if a little too short for what seems to be have the makings for a pretty good epic story.
If you're reading this series for the first time, be sure to read it in the correct order (starting with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) instead of the stupid order they are currently marketed in, as they will be much more enjoyable.

This is the third book from C.S. Lewis. This is a story of a boy named Shasta and his Narnian talking horse Bree. Shasta has lived half of his life by the sea being a fishermans "son". He later finds out that he's not his son at all. So Shasta is what the horse calls "kindnapped", though the horse just really took him away. They plan on going to Narnia when their journey is inturupted. Shasta meets a princess who was to be married but she ran away. Later,we find that she has a Narnian horse too, Hwin. So they set off for Narnia again, but shasta is planning to go north back to his "homeland". Shasta is later confused as Prince Corin. Will they ever make it to Narnia? Or tho the north for that matter? REad this book to find out.
