The Horse and His Boy

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Aladdin meets Oedipus meets the Bible's Job, kinda
While this story lacks quite a bit of the fantasy portion familiar to other "Chronicles of Narnia" books, it more than makes up for it with great character development, superb story-telling, and a complete and fulfilling plot, from setup to conclusion.

The protagonist of the story, Shasta, is a poor boy who is about to be sold into slavery. Desperate to escape this fate, he plays on running away with the horse of his future owner. Little did he know the horse, Bree, is a talking horse from Narnia who also wishes to be reunited with his original home.

Shortly thereafter, Shasta and Bree are joined by two other runaways, Aravis Tarkheena, an adventurous young girl born into riches, and her horse Hwin, who, like Bree, is also originally from Narnia. Hwin saved the life of Aravis, who is fleeing from an arranged marriage, and eventually talked her into traveling to Narnia together.

The four set out on a trek to Narnia where they encounter dangers, fear, and a few humorous scenarios.

Eventually the story unfolds into lessons and values typical of the "Chronicles of Narnia" series. Friendship and bonds are forged via the travels and new acquaintances. Courage is displayed and humility is learned as a result of trying situations, tests of will, and later a great battle. Even the idea of karma-driven morality comes into play as Aravis learns about the repercussions of her actions.

In the end, Aslan (who is present throughout several portions of the story) teaches the ultimate lesson of forgiveness, while guiding and protecting all throughout Narnia. And as a fairytale should end, good triumphs evil, there is a grand feast, and everyone who is just lives happily ever after.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Horse And His Boy
The horse and his boy by C.S. Lewis is a story about friendship, and what it means to have freedom a great 4 star book.

The stars are earned for painting a wonderful picture in your mind. The book is about Shasta a boy whos been a slave all his life. One night a warrior comes to buy him. In a desperate move he teams up with a horse from Narnia. The two become great friends and meet two more fugitives. Although Avris the girl thinks shes to good for him the two become the best of friends. Avris is running away from her future husband. The two friends and their horses Bree & Hwin must journey through the great city of Tashbaan (The home of Avris's future husband.)

While journeying through the city Shasta is captured by king Edmund who thinks he's the missing prince Corin. Meanwhile King Edmund and Queen Susan find out that either Susan marries the prince of the kingdom or is forced to be his slave. The king and queen have decided on taking their ship out. When Shasta (Still thought to be the prince) finds out that he will be traveling by sea he knows he must escape. Then the real prince comes and Shasta escapes. Shasta goes with Avris to Narnia. Shasta found out that he is the princes twin brother and that his real name is Cor. To find out what else happens you are going to have to read the book yourself.

Other books recomended. The Magician's nephew. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Prince Caspian. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Silver Chair. The Last Battle. My name is Andrew and I loved this book.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Complex novel that comes together in the end
The Horse and His Boy is one of the more complex Narnia novels, due to the new places, such as Tashbaan and Archenland, and the large cast of Tarkheenas, Kings, Queens, and Tisrocs.
This is not a bad book, just a slightly different one focusing on characters that have lived their whole lives in Narnia.
The four main characters are the children Aravis and Shasta, and two Talking Horses, Hwin and Bree. After making their way from the far south to the city of Tashbaan, their troubles really begin as the four become separted. Shasta is mistaken for Prince Corin, Aravis is encountered by a childhood friend, and in the process both learn of a great attack to be launched on King Lune of Archenland all for the sake of Prince Rabadash to reclaim his wounded pride.
As the four main characters reunite and make their way to the north, they learn that they are each brave in their own way. Aslan also reappears in this novel, and at the end Shasta even finds he has a twin. Due to everyone's cooperation, Archenland is warned in time to fight against Rabadash, who also learns a lesson about overblown egos...
This book fits well as the third novel in the series, and we finally get to learn about some of the independent characters of Narnia and the lands around it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Great Read
Shasta was a poor fisherman's son. He just couldn't trim his cravings to go to the vast and remote North to explore and have dangerous adventures! When a talking war horse named Breehy - hinny - brinny - hoohy - hah comes along, Shasta finds his chance! But there are all kinds of dangers along the way. Will this unlikely duo escape or be caught and sent back to Calormene?
I really liked how Aslan spoke in riddles. I also liked Shasta's overexcitement in the begining of the story and how his feeling for the North changes over time. My favorite character was Aslan because he was so mysterious. I also liked the authors choice of names. Adventure mixed in with a slight mysterious touch and action instantly made it one of my top rated books.
There isn't much I disliked about the book. Except of course the arrogance of the villians like Rabadash. But then again that is to be expected. Aslan should also appear more often! The plot did get a little twisted as well.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Horse and His Boy
As Shasta journeys to learn about himself, he discovers an evil man's plot to invade Narnia and has to risk his life to stop it from happening. Shasta is a normal boy who lives with his father when he meets a talking horse named Bree. He runs away with Bree planning on going to Narnia. On their way, they meet a girl named Aravis and her talking horse Hwin who are also running away and decide to come with them. In one city they find that Prince Rabadash is planning on invading Narnia. They have to beat their whole army to Narnia to warn the Narnians. This is a book that will be enjoyed by any reader.
The Horse and His Boy is very suspenseful. Aravis could have been killed if she had been caught listening to the Tisroc's secret meeting. It is exciting when Shasta spends the night between the tombs and the jackal-filled desert. The climax is when Narnia and Archenland battle with the army sent from Calormen.
This book has unique characters. Shasta is a normal boy who ends up saving a whole country. Aravis gave up her wealth and ran away because she didn't want to marry who she was forced to. Bree is a war horse, but he runs away because he is a talking horse of Narnia.
This story has a very unlikely hero. Shasta ends up saving Archenland and Narnia, but befoe that he was just a normal boy. He was just the son of a fisherman who he worked for. When Shasta met Bree, he had never even heard of Narnia or Archenland, but later risked his life to save them. Also, after he does all this, he finds out he is actually a prince of Archenland lost when he was a baby.
The Horse and His Boy is a great book filled with suspense and adventure. Any reader will be captivated by its suspense, adventure, and action. It is a wonderful story well worth reading.
