This was the first Smallville book I'd picked up and I instantly realized what people meant about the series seemingly being designed for ten-year-olds. But more than that was lacking in this doozy of a novel. The characters are off, the writing's juvenile and unimaginative, and the overall story just... SUCKS! Take my advice on this, skip this one and pick up 'Dragon'. That books not perfect either, but at least the plot will restore your faith in the series.

One of the few disappointing stories in the Smallville Series for Young Adults, Buried Secrets introduces a new Spanish teacher who can read people's minds. She has this ability, but hates using it, and doesn't do anything spectacular with it that warrants it as a freak-of-a-week episode. Clark and Lex falls for this Spanish teacher (although there is nothing really amazing like special powers through kryptonite to get everyone to fall for her), and have Clark (who is hopelessly in love with Lana) fall for her is unbelievable. Having built up Clark's strength of character to have him go after his Spanish teacher, despite the way he feels about Lana, is unbelievable. He even gets into a fighting jealous rage when Lex falls for the Spanish teacher, too. Anyone who has watched Smallville, even for one season, knows this is nonsense.

It was fairly well written. The plot is about a woman who is a substitute for the spanish teacher with the ability to read other's surface thoughts (like Ryan, from Smallville episodes "Stray" and "Ryan") but when she comes in contact with another and meteor rocks simultaniously, she cannot control it and blurts out the thoughts word for word in a seizure. The ending is predictable, but it doesn't really harm the story. I preferred this series over the longer novels until recently when i realized that these are just plain too short. This book could probably take up one (barely, anyway) episode length. And the other series has enough description and story to make Smallville: The Movie, if the series didn't follow the "freak of the week" routine from Season one. This young adult series had only attracted me previously because of superb authors Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfield who showed what Clark's purpose is: to defend and help, in Smallville 3, Flight. Suzan Colon is also getting there, but just not within reach. And the other series is basically authors coming in and trying their hand at writing Smallville without having to worry about the pressures of writing episodes. To summarize, this book is average.

a young and pretty substitute teacher comes to town for the spanish class and automatically all the guys are in love with her. she was caught out in the meteor shower 12 years ago and it left her with the ability to read people's mind. clark falls head over heels in love but is jealous when his friend lex starts dating her. they have a few heated words and they wonder if their friendship is worth more than a pretty woman. it is not one of the better smallville series but it will do to pass a few hours.

I just finished reading this book and it was great. It is definitely written from a female prospective which is excellent. The book is basically about a a beautiful young Spanish teacher that all the boys in Smallville have a total crush on. She was nearly killed in the meterior shower 12 years ago and as a result, she can now read other people minds. She read Pete's, Clark's, and Lex's mind which sort of freaked them out. Clark falls for her only to have her start dating Lex. He becomes jealous and picks a fight with Lex that resulted in Clark getting into a small fix involving a mud hole (which was totally funny). Any how, Clark must eventually swallow his pride and make amends with Lex and at the same time, not let the new teacher learn his secret.
