I got 25 pages into this (...) book before putting it down. I probably will not pick it up again. It was a free book from a publisher friend and so it was no big loss. Let me ask you a question - why is it that an author feels the need to introduce characters only to kill them off almost immediately? What's the point of taking the reader down that road? Particularly when the characters die seemingly pointless deaths. Why bother dragging the reader through the muck and mire if it goes nowhere? That's not good story telling - that's pure frustration. They always say that an author should grab the reader's attention within the first few pages of a book - make the reader WANT to read more. But if the author kills off characters with little or no thought, if their lives that he introduces are meaningless, then why should we - as readers - care about the characters? It really does not set a good precedence for the rest of the book. I may, out of desperation, try to finish this book - but - I doubt it.

Great adventure! I think Jack Kirkland could be a recurring character. The story did tend to bog down in a couple of places but it was ultimately more satisfying than the plot of "Subterranean" (which got silly at times). It was believable without too much "suspension of disbelief." The only negative I may have to offer is that it seems every undersea adventure story has to bring out the giant squid. It's like, "OK, time for the giant squid bit." Fortunately, that part is very short. Overall, a great read. I can't wait to get my hands on "Excavation." I hope it's as good.

This book has everything--science fiction, mystery, adventure, and an intriguing plot line that moves forward at breakneck speed. I couldn't put it down, and that's something for a 450-page book! There are many subplots, and Mr Rollins weaves them all together into a satisfying climax. The book is a little bit Tom Clancy, a bit of Clive Cussler, and a good plot line that is all Mr. Rollins' work! I truly loved this book and can't wait to share it with my husband and son-in-law.

Sorry folks: cornball dialogue, tired old SF elements, and a cop out, made-for-TV ending. Unredeemable.

James Rollins best yet by a long shot. Starts fast and never lets up. Not a dull moment. This will make a great movie and I think there is little doubt that it will become one. I can't wait for his next story and will be surprised if he can better this effort. Finally, an ending that befits the rest of the book by enhancing the story instead of disappointing the reader.
