The first third of this book is awesome but slows way down in the middle but don't despair it picks up again totally action packed.

This book takes the saga of "The Death of Superman", "Funeral for a Friend", "Reign of the Supermen", and "The Return of Superman", which appeared in comic book form in the mid 80's, and turns it to light reading.
The story starts slow, does not have the "punch" of the comic book stories, but picks up pace towards the end. I was a bit disappointed because it seemed to me that the author just looked at the pictures of the comic books, and turned them into words, without adding any new insight.

This is one of the best comics based novels there is. I have followed Superman comics since he died in '93. It followed the story to the T. I enjoyed reading it, and I continue to enjoy it every time I read it.

...and I've read a few. I usually don't cross Marvel and DC but Superman was a non-turn down kinda guy. I got the book when I was nine and never really got around to reading it. When I was assigned a book report, I thought that it would give me a little more insight into the new blue Superman (since I've read the book, I've also read the comic). I read it, found that have to know NOTHING about him and his cohorts to enjoy the story. I'll definatly read more books from Roger Stern.

Was reading this novel equivalent to reading the comics? By no means. It was better. Why? Beyond the fact that IT IS A SUPERMAN BOOK, there goes some reasons: 1. An incredibly complete (yet concise)chronicle of the facts surrounding the death of Superman 2. A deep introspective study on the main characters: Why Superman cares?, What makes Steel tick?, etc. 3. As it was pointed out by other reviewers, this book has a lot of background: you do not have to know anything about anyone (I liked a lot the guardian's origin). If you are a Superman fan, you will enyoy the ride; if you aren't, you could become one for reading this book
