I have only got as far as the 10 power foods list when I started using those 10 power foods and have already in a little over a week, lost 3 poundsa - just changing what you eat, the quality and rightness of the food already helps the body to drop the extra weight, helps to clean out your system.
Good advice and a wonderful read.

It's almost a joke to call this a diet book. As others have said, it's a lifestyle book. I started the diet about 2 1/2 weeks ago and have lost about 7-8 pounds and I was only hungry the first few days. My afternoon sugar cravings disappeared and I have felt better than I have in a long time. And I will confess, I did have one small margharita and some wine in Wave I and still lost weight. I've now added back some fruits and natural sugars and it's amazing how much sweeter they taste. I've always poured sugar over my cereal and now I find that berries give it plenty of sweetness. The recipes are great although time consuming in the beginning, especially if you're not used to preparing whole foods. The plan can be expensive if you follow to the letter but I just buy certain amount of veggies and use what I have on hand. I replace as I run out. I highly recommend this book to those wanting a healthy change in their lifestyle. I also recommend buying the companion cookbook, great recipes!

I got the Sonoma Diet book because I wanted to lose weight, eat well and drink wine. I have tried South Beach, it worked very well the first time and I lost about 20 lbs. Then I got pregnant and had to switch to the "whatever doesn't make me puke" diet. After I had my baby and finished breast feeding, I tried to go back on South Beach, and it just didn't work, the weight wasn't coming off like it did the first time. Diets as restricitive as South Beach phase 1 are impossible to stay on if you don't see results very quickly to motivate you to keep going. So I needed a change and decided to try the Sonoma Diet. After I started reading it I realized it was VERY similar to South Beach. It has 3 phases (called Waves here) and the first is very restrictive, so restricitive in fact, that you may have NO WINE in the first Wave, which greatly disappointed me. The main differences from South Beach are:
1) the first Wave is 10 days instead of 14
2) you can have some whole grain foods in Wave 1 on Sonoma, you can't on South Beach
3) there is an emphasis on portion control on Sonoma, not so on South Beach
4) Sonoma instructs you to compose your meals of specific ratios of food, e.g. a Wave 1 dinner should consist of 50% vegetables, 30% protein and 20% whole grains
Aside from that, they are pretty much identical. I agree with other reviewers that the Sonoma diet doesn't give you much help with controlling your cravings. South Beach is more realistic because it recognizes that some people may fall of the wagon and gives advice if you do, as well as tips to avoid it, like eat a sugar-free fudgesicle instead of pigging out on ice cream. The Sonoma book basically says just be tough and stick with it, and hang on until Wave 3 when you can have a dessert once a month or so. The recipes in this book are time consuming to prepare and require many fresh ingredients which a) are expensive, and b) necessitate more frequent trips to the grocery store. Sonoma does not give you any expectations for how much weight you will lose in Wave 1 either, South Beach clearly tells you 8-12 lbs. I also think that the Sonoma diet book gives some seemingly contradictory information. For instance, the meal plans given will sometimes not conform to the proper veg/protein/grain ratios they instruct you to follow elsewhere in the book. I think both diets are valid and will make you healthier if you follow their tenets. Sonoma has inspired me to make healthier meals using fresh ingredients instead of serving my kids processed nuggets all the time. Of course, I have the time to do this because I am a stay at home mom. If I was working full time and caring for a family, I would probably want to throw this book out the window. But between the 2 Sonoma diet books and 3 South Beach diet books I own, I have a vast collection of healthy recipes. That and my treadmill will hopefully lead to weight loss rapid enough to keep me motivated to continue.

Fantastic! The recipes are delicious and satisfying. The Sonoma Diet is all about healthy eating. My husband enjoys the meals and he isn't even dieting. He just eats larger portions. I am losing weight slowly but steadily. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it took a while to get used to preparing all the fresh ingredients. After following the plan on and off for about 4 months I am much faster at preparing the food and thinking about what can be done in advance to make dinner quick. I also highly recommend the Sonoma Diet Cookbook.

This diet was too boring for me to want to try. I started reading the book and could not finish it. I looked at some of the recipes, and knew that I did not want to try them. They just did not sound appetizing to me.
