Metropolis is actually based on Toronto, not New York.
Gotham was based on New York.

I rarely write reviews, but this book warrants one. There are so many songs/books/movies about superman, but few really give you the feeling that the story is occurring in the real world. While I understand that in many cases that is intentional (i.e. where is Metropolis anyway???) The author wanted to try a differnt story. He 100% succeeds by making this book feel so ... real (for a comic strip based novel). It works...and give a new spin (and refreshing) spin on an often told story. Read it to see what I mean.

For those who remember the,"Elseworlds", one shot comics form a few years ago, this novel would fit in that category. I don't know if I liked it.
De Haven knows NYC history very well. That came out very well. The racial undertones of the period were well written.
I think that introducing so much sex in the story hurt it. It takes the sheen off Superman's integrety. I know that Metropolis is based on the Big Apple. I didn't have a problem with the Big Apple being a part of the story, but it just didn't feel right not to have Metropolis at all.
Luthor was the most realistic character. I could see him as a mob boss, no problem.

I write book reviews for a major metropolitan newspaper and my review of IT'S SUPERMAN has not yet appeared, so I'll just say this: Tom DeHaven is super! Each year I have to pick the best novel of the year. I have pared the list of 80 books I reviewed to four--Jonathan Carroll's GLASS SOUP; Neil Gaiman's ANANSI BOYS; Graham Joyce's LIMITS OF ENCHANTMENT; and IT'S SUPERMAN. You can't go wrong with any of these titles. I got my review copy for free, but I bought three copies from Amazon for Christmas presents for members of my family.

I was in my local comic book shop(yes I am a comic book geek and proud of it)when this book caught my eye. All I can say is it's not quite what I expected but far,far more.
The author touches all the main points of Superman's origin without being a slave to continuity. I particularly enjoy his grounding of the story in real Depression era America. He takes his time developing the characters instead of throwing Superman at the reader on page 1.
I'm about two-thirds of the way through at this point and have yet to even see Superman and you know something? I don't even miss him! I highly recommend this book to any comic book/superhero fan.
