I'm not a big fan of Superman, but this book is great even for those that don't care for anything in the "super-hero" genre. Busiek writes a story that tries to take a truly realistic take on superheros - what would it be like if someone one day actually woke up with powers?
Clark Kent grows up in a world like our own, where superheroes only exist in comic books, and is constantly ridiculed for the irony that a mild-manner boy from a small town in Kansas is named after a powerful comic book character of the same name. After Clark one day realizes he actually has Superman's powers, the story portrays its bittersweet nature, balancing the bad - having to worry about the government, being afraid to go public or share your secret with those you love, and the effect that such power can have on good people - with the obvious benefits of having super powers as we see different stages of Clark's life.
The art is good, but it is Busiek's excellent ability to help us sympathize with his main character and convincing storytelling that makes the book outstanding. I'd recommend it to anyone!

If you were ever going to buy only one Superman Comic or Graphic Novel, then this is the one to get. I repeat, GET THIS ONE! Superman is my favorite comic character of all time. I've been reading Superman stories for over 40 years. This four part stand-alone graphic novel is simply one of the best Superman stories ever produced, within the Top Ten, no matter what the media. I won't rehash the story, suffice to say, it's terrific, the approach is very fresh. The art is very different in a good way, not too comic-y, not really even what many have come to know as graphic novels. I would really like to see this story expanded and novelized. It's just that great.

A very good twist on the Superman Story and a very well written story

You don't have to be a Superman fan to appreciate this gorgeous piece of fiction. I've greatly enjoyed Busiek's work on Astro City, and I feel he reaches an even higher level with this masterpiece. Immonen is the perfect illustrator for this work, deftly capturing the range of mood and expression as the story progresses.
This is not your typical superhero book, so fair warning to readers seeking a run-of-the-mill Superman story. But if you are willing to try something different, in the hands of a writer artist team that deeply respect the Superman mythos, you will not be disappointed.

What can I say about this story that hasn't been said a million times before? I'm a fan more of Superman's neighbor in Gotham City, but I LOVE this book. It really captures the heart and soul of Clark Kent and his family and friends. You learn to care for this guy and his supporting cast. You learn to love him, and when the series ends, you feel like you've lost a best friend. Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen have created a masterpiece for the ages. It really made me think how Superman would act and what he would do if he were real. He wouldn't knock around supervillans (they wouldn't exist): he would be more of a world-wide savior. And, if you think about it, that's what Big Blue really is.
I high recommend this book.
