Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Superman flops
I kind of liked this movie but it was the worst of the five Superman movies. If Christopher Reeve hadn't starred in this film like he originally planned, it would've been the crappiest movie ever made.
Warner Bros. gave Golan-Globus 40 million bucks to make this movie but they only used 17 million. The special effects weren't as good as in the other Superman movies. If the Salkinds had made this film, it would've been much better.
It really made me mad when Nuclearman took Lacy Warfield into outerspace and she didn't die. That was the stupidest thing that was in any of the Superman movies.
Another thing that was stupid about this movie was that Golan-Globus cut 45 minutes out of it. This caused parts of it not to make sense.
This film failed a South California screen test and this made Golan-Globus freak out. That's why they cut out the 45 minutes. If the missing footage hadn't been cut out, this film would've been better but not much. At least it would've made more sense.
On the moon scene you can see wires on Superman and black curtains around the set. I did like it when Nuclearman beat Superman into the ground.
This movie only made twenty-three million at the box office. That's probably why it took them 19 years to get around to making a fifth Superman movie. This wasn't a great film but I have seen worse.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Superman
I have all the Superman movies and LOVE all of them.
Christopher Reeves played superman great.
The new Superman:Returns is OK but REEVES is Superman.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Cannon Films ruined the Superman series with this messed-up entry
Oh, boy. Let's talk about Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Superman III may have been silly, but had certain appeal. The next film was probably the real deal, it sucks eggs. Well, to tell you the truth, it is true that the fourth film's production values on the visual effects were remarkably cheap, but the storyline had so much potential. When Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) nephew Lenny (Jon Cryer) helps Lex escape from prison, they plot to clone Superman/Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) and pit them against each other. Meanwhile, a tabloid news tycoon seizes control of the Daily Planet from Perry White (Jackie Cooper) and brings in his daughter Lacy (Mariel Hemmingway), much to Lois Lane's (Margot Kidder) disgust. When the nuclear warheads begin to pose a threat to Earth, Superman plans to save the planet by tossing the warheads into the sun. Lex and Lenny steal a strand of Superman's hair that he donated to a museum. They place the genetic material in the last nuclear warhead and trick Superman into throwing it to the sun, creating Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow, voice of Gene Hackman) and spawning a chain of events that continue the rest of the film. It did have some neat ideas, such as the battle between Superman and Nuclear Man. Cannon Films is so cheap, they only used 17 million dollars to produce the film instead of wasting all 39 million Warner Bros. gave them. As a result, the visual effects were incomplete and pathetic and there were a few things messed up, such as Lacy in outer space without a spacesuit and she didn't die, when the Great Wall of China was damaged, Superman used telekinesis to repair the wall, and moving the moon with the weather intact! Cheesy, isn't it? You can sometimes see the ropes in fighting scenes if you look closely. Even the first two had much better visual effects than that. This is one Superman film better off skipping, because of the poor visual effects and goofs. If you were still alive today, Christopher Reeve, I want you to know, I am so sorry all this had to happen. At least Superman Returns made an awesome comeback.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It Really Wasn't So Bad
Giving you a brief rundown of where I stand, I think Part 1 was a decent start. I liked Part 2 notably better. Part 3 was my favorite. This 4th one was not my favorite, but it did have some interesting elements.

I think more than anything, this movie would have done better if it had been placed right after Part 1. The problem here was NOT so much the content. The problem here is that 2 and 3 left 4 with a difficult act to follow. Think about it. In Part 2, Superman had to fight 3 beings with his powers. And in Part 3, the stakes were raised, and Superman had to fight the evil in himself. (Arguably the greatest scene in the whole saga!)

But now to the subject at hand. In his Clark Kent guise, Superman visits the home where he was raised on earth. He is tying up the loose ends of selling the house of his dead parents. He then goes back to work (as the reporter) only to find out that there is some possible corruption going on at the 'Daily Planet.' Do we report the news fairly and objectively, or do we write things that will grab the reader 'as false as they may be?' Their news office is being choked by a 'Donald Trump' type, and perhaps Mr. White may have his chance to be a hero if he can stop this.

The threats of world wide war are brought into play, and Superman wonders if it is his right to intervene. (This kind of brings us back to the conversation he had with his father Marlon Brando in part 1.)

In a comical manner Lex Luthor's nephew Lenny gets him out of jail, and they begin to make plans for creating a 'super villain' to help them in their quest. He and Superman of course have their fights. (In one of them, Superman gets injured quite badly.) This shows that Superman can be hurt. (Good)

I don't want to say too much and ruin the movie for those who have not seen it. But if we are willing to see it in its own right, without comparing it to the previous 3, this 4th chapter really isn't so bad.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of my Favorites!!!
I honestly don't know why so many people hate this movie! It has an awesome superhero going against an awesome villian named Nuclear Man. I loved their battles. Superman tries to save the people of the world against a nuclear war. Lex Luthor puts something on one of the missiles and Superman unknowingly creates Nuclear Man by throwing it into the sun. Will Superman be able to stop this nuclear villian? I highly recommend SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE!!!
