This is a really great album. To give it 5 stars is a bit much, though. Most of the songs are interesting, some are funny, and some are beautiful. The change from Times they are a changin is huge, and a die hard protest-Dylan fan would probably be dissapointed by this album. (Personally, I like it better then Times they are...) The album starts with the classic All I Really Want to do, and rarely falters in brilliance. Get this album, it's good stuff. Gems: All I Really Want to Do, Black crow Blues, Spanish Harlem Incident, To Ramona, My Back Pages (these are MY favorites, but Chimes of Freedom, Balled in Plain D, and It ain't Me Babe are classics that most buyers will love.

I discovered this album when I was sick with the flu, but hope that doesn't prejudice me. This album seems understated to the point of disappearance. But you can't argue you with the hilarity of Motorpsycho Nightmare, the beauty of Ballad in Plain D, or the devesatation of It Ain't Me Babe. Still, I think My Back Pages is enough to deserve howls of derision. And what exactly happens in Ballad in Plain D to break up the romance? Dunno. But I forgive all hearing the line "Are birds free of the chains of the skyway?"

I dont know how there is even room for debate. "Ballad in Plain D" (which for some reason is not listed on the playlist) is quite possibly one of the most moving songs I have heard to date. With this as well as all Dylan albums, I find myself rapt in awe by his intense reality.

here is weher dylan writes and sings about his personal woes and desires. some of the folkies were a bit disappointed with the lyrics that lacked social commentary and protest. Dylan tells us tales with lots of humor and many of the songs here were covered by rock bands such as the byrds and others. Motorpsycho is incredibly fascinating in it's spook of redneck farmers and college kids caught ina situation that they were unprepared for. I shall be free no. 10 is great satire, and the other songs are timeless tales of desire and lost love. This was the last album before dylan shocked the purists with the electric bringing it all back home and highway 61 revisited. this makes a great accoustic companion piece to the much heralded electirc dylan of the mid sixties.

So this is probably Dylan's first 'betrayal' to the legions of folk kids (oh, those misled folkies), singing in an even more direct and personal vein than ever before. Where's the social commentary??! The indictment of injustices??! Its still here, and like the releases to come, in a more subtle and hidden way. Fans should have learned not to try to anticipate Dylan in these high-flying days. It truly is 'Another Side..' here, a more playful one in songs like 'I shall be free' and the most amusing 'Motorpsycho Nightmare'. Meanwhile, hits like 'Chimes of Freedom', 'My back Pages' and 'It Ain't me Babe' simply ache, and brand themselves into one's emotions.
