John Henry

In association with Amazon.com
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very good in spite of critics.
It takes a while to get the hang of this one but it is worth it. This summer I spent 2 weeks in an armed compound in Pakistan (really) and took 2 dozen disks with me, John Henry won hands down. An idiot reviewed this for Amazon.com saying "These 20 songs include a tune that quotes Allen Ginsberg's "Howl,"" and decided that was reason enough to pan it. Actually, the song (I Should be Allowed to Think) made fun of Ginsburg; ie "I should be allowed to blurt out the merest idea if by random whim one occurs to me". He also hated "Dirt Bikes" which is a great commentary on the trendiness of our culture. Meet James Ensor, The End of the Tour, and Destination Moon are classics. This album has excellent lyrics and very good music. I didn't give it 5 stars only because Flood and Severe Tire Damage are better but this is a fine CD.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Their best AND their worst, oddly enough
This album is unique in the TMBG canon...it includes what is without a doubt the worst song they ever recorded (Unrelated Thing) but also what could be the best (No-one Knows My Plan, which nearly beats the ne plus ultra of Giantdom, Ana Ng.) My recommendation: start listening at AKA Driver. Everything before it is pretty much forgettable, and nearly everything that follows it is pretty damn good.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It's subliminal!
This is one of my favorite TMBG albums. And TMBG being my favorite group, that makes it one of my all time favorite albums. It's right up there with Factory Showroom and Apollo 18.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - yumm!
now THIS is an album! every song is a joy. i particularly enjoy "AKA driver", "i should be allowed to think" and "subliminal". i have no idea why some have said that this is TMBG's worst album. humph! the johns have really done it this time, an album worthy of being played over and over again in my stereo: i never will have to change discs again!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - One of the smartest bands in rock...
...right up there with Ben Folds Five and The Flaming Lips. The full band sound is a great addition and the bass lines are incredible. Though it's not FLOOD(which will always be my personal gold standard) it's still great music from one of my all-time favorite bands.
