The Recoton 50/1600 W converter worked for approximately 25 minutes when it went out in a puff of smoke and sparks. The odd thing is that the fuse is still intact. Thankfully I was close by to turn the outlet off. Waste of money and dangerous to boot.

The converter worked great but the plastic box that holds the converter et al is HORRIBLE! It was difficult to open & close the plastic box. My hands suffered with scrapes, bruises & cuts from trying to open the darn thing. It was difficult to get it to close properly as well as getting it to stay closed.
We used this kit on a recent two week trip to Munich, Val Gardena, Cortina & Venice. The converter worked just fine. I used the transformer/converter on low wattage to recharge a digital camera as well as on high wattage for my curling iron. I too found that my curling iron heated up faster than at home. The converter brick grew medium hot & had an electrical scent to it while in use. It needed to cool for a few minutes before packing away.

I bought this set primarily to be able to recharge my DVD player battery, which has a 120V-only AC adapter, rather than the 120/240V capability that many chargers for cell phones, cameras, and videocams, as well as hair dryers and razors, now have. If the device (or its charger) is 120/240V, you only need a plug adapter to fit the electrical outlet.
The voltage converter worked perfectly and allowed me to recharged the DVD battery, via its AC adapter power cord, half a dozen times. I had the wattage switch on "low" (0-50W) for this use. I would award four and a half stars if I could, because I never used it with a high wattage appliance, and hence cannot attest that it works as well under such conditions.
I sometimes travel with a portable hair dryer, but it has a dual voltage switch, so I only use it with a plug adapter. Additionally, the dryer is in the neighborhood of 1600 watts, so I would be reticent to try an appliance at the top of the converter's stated wattage range.

I've had my converter for a year now, with no problems. For one thing, all converters are heavy....they are transformers. You should see the step-up transformer I have now to convert 110 to 220 !! I bought my recoton before I ever had the chance to read the reviews, or I may never have bought it in the first place. I did not get a dud like other buyers. It does the job. Just remember to watch the wattage settings for the device you are using. If not, you'll fry one thing or another. Usually the more expensive one.

I bought this converter on the premise that I would be able to use my Sony 15 Minute Rapid Charger with it. Turns out you cant, as it has a MASSIVE gap of usable wattage. I cant use any appliance from 50-500 watts. If you use it, you risk damage to your appliance and the converter. My Sony charger is 80 watts, and it cannot be used with it. This wasnt specified in the description, and I am very upset that I now have to return this product.
Pass on this, and buy something else.
