Deltron 3030

In association with Amazon.com
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Classic Album
I heard so much about it. It's on the same level as Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, and the Mr. Nogatco albums. Del and the Automator are awesome artists.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Del, Dan, and KidKo
Until last week, this CD had been in my "unlistened" collection of a bunch of CDs my friend gave me about five years ago. The other day, I got to thinking how much I had come to love the music he had given me, specifically the Del Tha Funkee Homosapien CDs. Then I remembered this little number and decided to pop it in. From track 01, with the whithering beat, and the monologue over the top, you might think it's your typical hip-hop CD, as it has a typical hip-hop intro. Then on to track 02, when the beat jumps in, and your thinking this a pretty tight beat. Then Del is busting lyrics with the raw talent that made him an underground hit in the early 90's. It's not necessarily his flow across the song, but his flow when he gets into a zone (basically when he's rhyming every third word and changing tone rapidly). This is very Busdriver-like (if you like this CD check out any of Busdrivers' CDs). However regardless of how good Del's flow is throughout this album, the beats are just as good. They are balanced, and made perfectly for each of their songs. It's very rarely that you'll be like, "What the eff was Dan (the Automator) thinking here." (And if you know anyting about hip-hop you should never say that.)

But don't get me a wrong, there may be a crowd out there that doesn't like this. Basically that crowd will deny Dan and Del's (and KidKo apparenly?)authenticity as hip-hop artists. For one, this music doesn't contain your typical hip-hop beats. It contains your classic drum beats, but there is a lot of orchestral stuff going on over the top. Also, like I said, Del isn't classically hip-hop lyrically on this album. With more of the "zones" then your probably going to hear in mainstream hip-hop. He is a very lyrical emcee, and this might be over some people's heads.

This album may have been the mainframe for modern-day experimental labels such as Definitive Jux, and Anticon. It also influenced a lot of the indie artists I knows flavor. This album could be seen as the founding brick in the resurrection of good hip-hop...or the final stone in the golden era of hip-hop. Anyway you look at it, it's amazing. And a must-own.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - wow a whole new way of thinking
this album is so incredible. its a conceptual story, and a fantastic omen. besides being pure hip hop this goes so far out there to construct a ideal thats crazy. to me this sort of hip hopera is compareable to like pink floyd the wall and jeff waynes war of the worlds. its a masterpiecefrom 3 creative minds to really undestand it you have to listen straight through and do that continuosly sort of like the wall. certain songs are magnificent on thier own but the whole is better that the sum of the parts

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "It's instupituous!"
Deltron 3030 is a concept album about an Orwellian future where a giant conglomerate has taken over the world and homogenized our lives, jobs, music, etc. Two heroes have stepped forward to battle our oppressors: Deltron Zero and the Automator. On another level, Deltron 3030 is a concept album about right now where a corporate structure has taken over the music industry and homogenized our hip-hop. Two artists have stepped forward to battle trite, radio-ready rap music: MC Del the Funkee Homosapien and producer Dan the Automator (with DJ Kid Koala along for the ride).

The former concept doesn't really hold water to close scrutiny, as Del's lyrics are designed more to dazzle with acrobatic wordplay and a barrage of pop culture references than to spin a cohesive yarn. Of course, that doesn't mean that it isn't a load of fun. In dizzying fashion, Del spits verses about "Ghost in the Shell", Silver Surfer, the Decepticons, "The Matrix", Neo-Tokyo, Micro Machines, Final Fantasy and Optimus Prime. And that's in the first two songs. To claim that Deltron 3030 is somewhat "nerdy" would not be unfair. Again, that doesn't mean that it isn't a load of fun.

As far as the latter concept, it is sadly very true, both now and when the album was released. In similar fashion to his efforts on Dr. Octagonecologyst, Dan is purely brilliant in his crafting of sonic landscapes for his counterpart to play in. Unlike the aforementioned album, however, he now has a partner who is equally talented in his respective craft. Del delivers his gonzo rhymes with precision and intensity. Together they create a magnificent sci-fi epic with a great sense of humor. Del's crazy lyrics would sound out of place over a Timbaland or Kanye West beat, for example, in much the same way that a generic rhyme about hustling or fashion would never make sense over the cinematic production of the Dan the Automator. Throw in the superb and tasteful scratching of Kid Koala and you understand why this album has become the cult classic it has.

Although Deltron 3030 is meant to be taken as a whole, with skits interspersed between each song, certain tracks do stand out. "3030" is sweeping and grandiose, like a John Williams score. "Turbulence" boasts the darkest, scariest hip-hop production since Dr. Octo. Nowhere do the talents of the three chief collaborators culminate in such a beautiful fashion as on the tremendous "Madness". The best song on the album is also one of the best in hip-hop history.

Deltron 3030 is a fearless, uncompromising and sprawling masterpiece. It doesn't surprise me that it hasn't garnered a lot of attention in the casual hip-hop community. None of these artists have ever made any attempt to market themselves to a mainstream audience. That's not a compliment or a fault, just a fact. Regardless, any fan of any type of music should find this album enthralling and worthy of their time. There really isn't anything else out there that sounds like this. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be a little nerdy yourself.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic
This CD is just great. There's not even much more that needs to be said about it but I'll elaborate.
Deltron 3030 is a concept album that "takes place" in the year 3030 with Del tha Funkee Homosapien bringing amazing lyrics with awesome beats from Dan the Automator and Kid Koala. The album is so replayable it's crazy. I've listened to it straight through at least 40 times in the past couple years and many of the tracks are permanents on my mp3 player.
Highlights include:
3030
Mastermind
Madness
Time Keeps on Slipping

It's just a great album that I would highly recommend to anyone who... well basically anyone. I've introduced it to several of my friends and they all love it. Buy this, you won't regret it.
