I want to mirror the statements of those reviewers who noted that Alien Ant Farm is a far better live act than a studio recording team. Yes, they polish up nice, but their live performance is stellar. I saw them shortly after this album was dropped (they opened for Lit) and I was blown away by their energy and presence. Its funny how, when placed in a live setting, a song can take on a totally different form.
That said, Alien Ant Farm's debut album `ANThology' is a pretty decent collection of catchy and engaging rock tunes. They have the issue of becoming too comfortable and thus too redundant (there's a stretch in there that runs itself together) but for the most part this is a solid album. If they had extracted maybe four tracks from the album (9 songs is a good length, leaving no room for filler) then this album would be an A for me.
I'll start by getting the four I'd throw out, out of the way.
`Summer', `Sticks and Stones', `Stranded' and especially `Death Day' are just boring. `Summer' kicks off the stretch of redundant tunes, and while `Attitude' is in that stretch, I still enjoy that song to a degree and feel that it is the better of the monotonous tracks. If the others didn't exist then it wouldn't feel redundant to me. `Death Day' is just plain bad. I don't see anything about it worth noting other than that I don't like it.

Thankfully, the rest of the album is very good.
I love the vibe to `Flesh and Bone' and find the fun quality of `Calico' to outweigh the apparent silliness of it all. `Universe' was a nice way to end the album, not necessarily for the track itself but for the hidden track that follows it, which is one of my favorite parts of the album. Like I mentioned, `Attitude' carries the same general flow of the four bottom tier tracks, but it is slightly better. I actually think that I'd really like it had it not been muddled by the tracks that surrounded it.
9) Attitude
8) Universe (although the hidden track would be at like #3 for me)
7) Calico
6) Flesh and Bone
The album opens with a bang, the one-two punch of `Courage' and `Movies' really setting the tone for the album. This is one main reason why I wish that they had trimmed the fat a little. These songs are so amazing that it really gets your hopes up, and it's sad when those hopes are crushed by a slew of mediocrity dividing the CD in two. `Whisper' and `Wish' are devilishly good, nice intensity and grasp of a heavier mentality. I adore `Wish', even if it never sounds like that is what he's saying. Of course, there is no denying that the best track here is the one that made them a household name. Their take on the infamous `Smooth Criminal' is insanely good (and that music video was fabulous). This is just such a fun and fresh and exciting take on the track that we all know and love. It's a rare feat when a remake of a song can feel just a fun as the original. They put their own twist without ever doing Michael a disservice.

In the end I must say that this is a find. Sure, it has a few weak moments, but the good ones outweigh them and make this worth the time and money. It has a great feel and a fun atmosphere. This is one of those albums that has a distinct and memorable personality!

If you like the Smooth Criminal cover, you'll be disappointed by the rest of the album. Not a big fan of this band after hearing this album. They are creepily generic as if molded in an MTV laboratory somewhere in New York City. Just buy the MP3 single, and don't buy this album.

I found this cd in a cd changer I bought off ebay so I thought I would check it out. I had heard Smooth Criminal, Movies, and Attitude and knew they were pretty good but I was surprised how good the rest of the songs were. Whatever happened to these guys?

The best ever re-make of a Michael Jackson song! Band sounds tight and has rythm but this style of music tends to sound the same.
