I listen to ALL types of music. I'm a pianist and a natural singer. Music has had such a deep impact on my life. I've gone through stages of Punk, Rap, Hip Hop, R&B, New Age, Grunge, Techno, Trance, Alternative, etc ... even Country, but this is the one CD that I can NOT live with out!!
I don't believe that everyone needs to have the same outlook as me, that would make the world boring. Jimmy Eat World is one of those bands that you have to get in order to appreciate their music. Because Jimmy Eat World isn't just another label manufactured band, they have substance and they have heart. You can practically hear the rythm of their hearts beating throughout their songs.
I was first introduced to Jimmy Eat World when I used to skateboard. My friends and I were all piled into a truck and I heard one of the songs from Clarity, and I just became hooked. I never forgot about the band, just hadn't heard them again until 2 years later. I was in Monterey, traded my skateboard for Army fatigues, and my friend played "Hear You Me". The song just blew me away. ALL of the songs on the album have such meaning that is personal to me, it's as if this album echoes my life. When I listen to this CD, I become so emotional. No music has ever had quite this impact.
I'm in Bosnia now. Although I have had this CD since 2001, I had to reorder it as it's in Arizona and it's the one CD I cannot live without. I usually get bored of a CD easily, but I can listen to this on repeat for the rest of my life.
Jimmy Eat World is absolutely brilliant, but this is their best -- in my opinion. I don't care what anyone else says, EVERY song has a significant meaning no matter how many times I play it.

I don't know if this really qualifies as a guilty pleasure, but gosh darn it, I really like this album. The self titled album from Jimmy Eat World is a solid cd, full of catchy emo tracks that have plenty of guitar crunch as well as plenty of softer more melodic moments.
The album opens on a high note with Bleed American, a blistering song criticizing the American way of TV culture and pill poping. It's not Dead Kennedy's social commentary, but it is fairly intellegent and the riff is killer. A Praise Chorus continues the power pop from the first song and includes lyrics from Crimson and Clover by Tommy James in a way that works well. And track three is the song that almost everyone who buys this album wants to hear. Though I take crap from my metal head buddies and pretentious indie rock fans for liking this song, I can't help it. It's insanely catchy and has very inspirational lyrics for the manic depressed or angsty among us. It's an absolute classic song that sticks in your head for a long time.
Sadly the album peaks early, but there is still a few great moments on the album. The Authority Song is a decent song about a song, and some of the quieter instrumentation is pleasant enough.
So overall, this is a solid album of decent emo songs. It's front loaded with the three best songs from the album, but the rest of it is far from throw away. So if your looking from some decent emo in a vast wasteland of crap like The Used and Story of the Year, then I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this album.

Thanks to the constant airplay of The Middle and Sweetness, Jimmy Eat World became one of the few 21st century bands I'm familiar with. The rest of the album follows the same formula as the radio songs, to about the same effect. There's diversity on here, with Bleed American a decent rock song, and Hear You Me a heartfelt requiem. My major complaint is a lack of complexity. The lyrics are pretty much monosyllabic, and the songs are all simple verse-hook-verse-hook-bridge-hook. Because of that, I'm tempted to drop them to 3 stars, but the band is good at what they do and I have to give them credit for that.

I am actually not Jim Adkins, as any TRUE Jimmy Eat World fan should know... *glares* he is probably on a plane to somewhere for touring and yeah.... SO. I say it in all honesty. this CD is the absolute best thing ever ever EVER since instant ramen was invented! I absolutely LUUUUURVE every single song on this CD... except stupid "Hear You Me". ballads just really aren't my thing. but hey.. it's whatever squeaks your ducky. "Sweetness" is by far my favorite, in all its annoying felicitosity. it bugs the hell out of my friends, though. haha. "Get it Faster" has got a harder edge, for all you korn and whoever else fans out there. "Bleed American" just plain rocks my socks. >;] it's something like new found glory, for tone. "Praise Chorus" was actually the first Jimmy Eat World song I ever heard.. O_o. anyhoo, it's just bursting with toe-tap-osity, although it's not quite as annoyingly happy as "Sweetness". "The Authority Song" is quite as annoying and not quite as happy, but catchy nonetheless. "Your House" is really sweet and acoustic-y sounding. "If You Don't, Don't" is on a par with "Praise Chorus" for fluffy-sounding-ness. "Cautioners" is a good transfer from "Get it Faster" to "The Authority Song", being kinda saddy-slow. and last but not because the rest of the songs are in order (and they're not, btw) "My Sundown" is the best ending track known to humanity. it's very laid-back and slow and it's got a "closing time" (not referring to the song) mood to it... it's the kinda thing you could fall asleep to. and I have. it's a little depressing, though. but all taken into account, you should go out right now (yes, you. pick up your car keys and skedaddle) and BUY IT!!!! really cool people would buy this CD! (what a teriffic reason... not. buy it anyway.)
from the mouth of the idiot,
your truly

Jimmy Eat World has always been a band to grace us with beautifully crafted songs and this cd is no exception.
Although all from the same EMO genre, the CD contain such a variety of types of songs, from more hardcore metal sounding songs like "Bleed American", Punk-Pop Blink 182 songs like "The Middle", more fast paced driven songs like "A Praise Chorus" and Sweetness, and an acoustic ballad "Hear You Me", that this cd has unlimited replayability. It's not another MXPX or All American Rejects where in concert you can't tell the distinctions between the songs cause all you hear is the beat and the same overplayed power chords(No offense to those bands. I have their CDs and their awesome too, but in a completely different way).
I've had this CD for at least over 2 years, and I never get sick of it. I find myself listening to it at least once a week, and I own A LOT of CDs.
In short, if you want a great CD of a great band, and you're into this type of music in the first place, then you need this cd in your collection.
I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!!!!
