This was the first Jimmy Eat World album that I ever bought, and it did get me to be a fan. However, even though the music on this album is good, I think that it's the worst album they've released. Out of all of their albums, this one is my least favorite.
I'd recommend getting this album, but do check out the rest of their music. It's all uphill from here.

i first heard this band when i was watching (of all films...!), Van wilder and in the opening credits, the song Bleed American was playing, i heard it, i liked it, i wanted to hear more. Eventually i bougt this album on a whim, not expecting to fall in love with it the way i did.
I never thought that i, a half irish, half arab, british born muslim girl would ever relate to a group of twentysomething white guys from some small town in America. But to some extent this album showed me that dispite cultural differences, all humans have the same instinctive drives to their emotions. we all love, feel hurt, feel envy, pride, lust, anger, hope etc. This is one of the most relatable albums i have ever endeavoured to listen to, and i'm so happy to have found this band as honestly their music has an effect on me! they talk about growing up into society, love (as most bands do!), success, confidence, being hurt. I find this album to be extremely uplifting, and it reminds me that i'm not the only person in the world that feels inadequate, lonley, hurt, hopeful at times. i love it and i find it to be a testament to youth, and self introspection.
BLEED AMERICAN- 5/5. Paradoxical song. The guitar riff is massively uplifting and it is sung with such power, whereas the lyrics such as "i'm not crazy cos i take the right pills every day", just show the insecurity of youth. i love it.
A PRAISE CHORUS-4/5. uplifting great song. about forcing yourself to get up, have faith and enjoy life. its about the way it makes you feel when you hear a song you love.
THE MIDDLE- 5/5. such an inspirational song, it is about learning that you are good enough, don't change for anyone, perseverance will make things happen for you. "it's just takes some time...your in the middle of the ride..everything will be just fine". this is an anthem directed to those of us out there that just feel were not worth anything and what we do isn't goos enough.
YOUR HOUSE- 4/5. This song is about confusion in love. It is about when you love someone so much, but you just don't feel that it is requited. "you rip my heart right out... if you still care at all, don't go tell me now..." he wants to know how she feels, and then tells her, "if you love me at all, don't call" because he needs to get over her. I think almost everyone can relate to this feeling, my god it hurts. it's nice to hear someone else say it though, that's why i love this melodic song!
HEAR YOU ME- 5/5. what a stunning song. it is about losing someone you loved and not expecting it, and you never really had the chance to tell them how much they meant to you. "you gave me some place to go, i never said thank you for that, thought i might get one more chance". It almost takes the format of a prayer, "may angels lead you in, hear you me my friends", He is praying that angels will lead his friends into heaven. This song never stops touching me. And we have all lost someone we loved havn't we?
IF YOU DON'T, DON'T- 4/5. This is a nostalgic song, about mssing someone you used to spend alot of time with, and remebering the things you used to do together and how strongly you felt for them. mid tempo song.
GET IT FASTER-3/5. this is an angry song about getting out of a relationship or something that is making you unhappy, to the point where you just have to take control and say, no more!
CAUTIONERS-5/5. I think this song is beautiful. it is slow and melodic, and jim adkins sings it beautifully. "you'll change your mind, come monday...and turn your back on me...". it is a lovesong about fear of losing the one, them distancing them selves. i could listen to this over and over again, it is so emotive.
THE AUTHORITY SONG-4/5. this song inspires a kind of fifties or sixties theme to it for me, may sound crazy, but its putting an angry i'm taking control theme to it, over a really cheery, mid tempo melody. i love the contradictory effect.
MY SUNDOWN- 3/5. almost like an outro to the album, slow song that says goodbye in one way or another.
if you love good lyrics and melodies and your not trapped within the boundaries of any specific musical genre, then give this album a listen, you may be pleasantly surprised!

If i am able to listen to an album all the way through, well than thats obviously a great album for me. Jimmy Eat World's self-titled album is one of them. This is my favorite album by these guys. they are totally awesome. I first found out about these guys a while back completely by accident. I was listening to one of my sister's "mix" cds and their one song that really got my attention. it later turned out to be Lucky Denver Mint. after i heard that song i new i had to get a cd by these guys. shortly after i heard that song, thier new album Futures came out, so I asked for it for my birthday and i got it. a few months later i got the self-titled album (the one i'm reviewing now) and just last night i got Clarity, one of their older records. Out of the three, their self-titled record is my favorite, 5 out of 5. Clarity is my second favorite. Its slower than Futures or the self-titled but its still good, 4.5 out of 5. Futures is actually my least favorite album. For what it is, its not all bad, but i think they could have done a little better, 4 out of 5 stars. Overall, Jimmy Eat World is an awesome band, in fact their probably my favorite band right now. They play an great variety of rock music whether it'd be hard rock (Bleed American, Sweetness), pop rock (The Middle, A Praise Chorus) or your acoustic ballads (Hear You Me, My Sundown). Overall, Jimmy Eat World is one of the best bands around today. if you don't any records by them, at least get this one. you won't regret it.
