Two years after their multi-platinum hit Astro Lounge, Smash Mouth followed with their self-titled third album. "Smash Mouth" is a worthy follower to its predecessor, because the songwriting and production are right on par with the ingenious pop tunes of Astro Lounge. But where Astro Lounge was an experimental album that toyed with many different genres, from nostalgic rock to contemporary rock, reggae, and even hip hop, "Smash Mouth" is more musically consistent. On this effort, they instead stick to what they do best, which is clever pop-rock tunes. The instrumental talent is in heavier supply here, as there are more pumping guitar solos and musical breaks, and noticeably less electronica and synthesizers. Steve Harwell's lyrics are just as ironic and clever as we're used to. The result is an album that's every bit as fun as its predecessor, if not a little more mature.
The album begins with the great "Holiday in My Head," a sunny, happy guitar-laden tune with motivational lyrics. "Your Man" is a heartfelt, very well-constructed love song that is very catchy, and while it doesn't stand out upon first listen, it's a very nice track. "Pacific Coast Party" is this album's anthem, heavy on whistling strings and a woozy synth. Few songs evoke the breezy California lifestyle like this one, a classic party song. "She Turns Me On" and "Sister Psychic" are two very catchy, clever pop songs constructed perfectly from the Smash Mouth formula. "Out of Sight" and "Force Field" are both a little slower, heavier on the ideas presented in Harwell's verses. My favorite song is "Shoes n' Hats," which might be my favorite song of the entire Smash Mouth discography. This song is one of their purest rock numbers, and the guitar solo before the final verse is excellent. The song has a catchy bassline and inspired hook which is introduced with stop-n-go drumming, adn Harwell's verses present the irony of life in one of his better performances. "Hold You High" and "The In Set" are entertaining and fun like any great tune by this band, and another highlight is the unique "Keep It Down," a very musically inventive number. The album closes with their well-known cover of the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" from Shrek - Music from the Original Motion Picture.
For anyone who liked Astro Lounge, "Smash Mouth" is a worthy follow-up that deserves a place in your collection. It's fun pop-rock at its finest, well-written, clever, and effective. Highly recommended.

I'm not as into Smash Mouth as I am into the Backstreet Boys, but Smash Mouth is actually really good. This is a good album by those guys. How many CDs do these guys have out right now? So far, I've only got two of them. I actually listen to this CD more than I listen to the other one. because it has more of a lively beat to it than the other one does. That's it for my review, and as always, I highly recommend this album to any one who's a smash mouth fan.

I first had Astro Lounge for about a year and I started to listen to it again, so I headed over to my local Sam Goody and picked this album up to hear more of their songs. I really appreciate Smash Mouth's music. It has a cool feel like the 60s music but modern. It is nice that they are doing something that nobody else is doing. This album is really hard to not listen to again and again. I like that fact that they have a positive feel, but they aren't saying stuff like "Jesus will save you." Smash Mouth is a really good album that you should pick up if you want a good rock album that has a cool oldies feel to it.
