to date, I have three goo goo dolls albums in my digital library; a boy named goo, dizzy up the girl and gutterflower. gutterflower is by far my favorite. the first single, here is gone, is perhaps the best goo goo dolls song to date, with instant radio appeal. Sympathy is also an instant favorite, a song you can get lost in, and "truth is a whisper" has a perfect pop-rock chorus. I won't bore you with a track by track listing, but all of them are good, trust me. I listen to this cd all the time, while I'm doing homework, hanging out, or just kicking back to relax. it works with all moods. highly recommended.

Gutterflower happens to be the first cd I've perchased from this band. I was a little hesitant at first, being a little parniod about wether or not I was going to like it. After listening to it, it became one of my favorite cd's. Your not just listening to the same stuff over and over again with different lyrics. The songs each have a likeable quallity to them, my favorites being, "Big Machine", "Here is Gone", "What a Scene", and "Sympathy". John Rzeznik did an exellent job at the vocals. Although Robby Takac, sings four of the songs, my favorite being, "You Never Know", "Up, Up, Up" is my least favorite song on the cd. Still he does a good job showing a bit of a different side to the band giving their music an enjoyable edge. So even if #6 happens to be a song I do not like as much as the others, I give it FIVE STARS anyways because it's just that good. The Goo Goo Dolls, Gutterflower, made me happy to spend my money!:)

Yeah, that's right! Take it from someone who listened almost exclusively to classic rock, the Goo Goo Dolls will convert you! You will retire to the archives those old records and tapes. This is a band of dedicated, very talented musicans producing not only memorable songs, but the mix, the tempo and the overall quality of this album is remarkable. Strongly suggest you purchase the Goo Goo Dolls' Live in Buffalo CD/DVD as a complement to this album. Many of the songs originating on Gutterflower were on the Live in Buffalo set list. And, bonus, Gutterflower contains a few songs not played on the Live in Buffalo CD/DVD, including what has to be one of the best modern rock tunes of the last couple of years, the last cut, Truth is a Whisper. If you enjoy groups like Audioslave or Nine Inch Nail, wait until you hear Truth is a Whisper!
In Gutterflower, lead singer, songwriter and lead guitarist John Rzeznik (properly pronounced with the first "z" silent) artistically comes of age. John's voice has reached a maturity and resonant quality so as to have arrived as a top modern rock vocalist. His now deeper and broader range as well as more powerful volume and projection is quite noticeable. It's a quality of maturity and age and dedication to his craft. But, fear not, that airy, edgy almost raspy tonal quality infused with his signature nasal resonance and still-present east coast accent still comes through in classic ballads like Sympathy. His increasingly impressive ability to just haul back and belt out a solid, powerful performance in classic rock style is amply demonstrated on both Big Machine and Here Is Gone, both songs among the best rock you will hear anywhere. If you have the need for first class vocals in your rock, you got here! I really believe John could shout at someone to get off his lawn in perfect pitch!
Gutterflower, being a studio production benefits from a rich mix of vocals, solid guitar work. crisp beats and generous laying-in of side percussions. It's almost a work of art. Bass guitarist, Robby Takac is a master of deep solidly rythmic bass accompanyment, sometimes playing a bass guitar so deep and rich, well the door panels in your car will resonate! He never overwhelms, he simply adds that deep polish to that clean, shiny finish! While John Rzeznik's vocals are a hallmark of Goo Goo Dolls music, Robby does an admirable job on several of his own songs. Every day, Robby's punkish style songs and vocals grows on me. And, in several of Robby's songs, you get a slightly different mix, with John's lead guitar work clearly and cleanly heard. John may be the most underrated lead guitarist in modern rock today.
Conclusion, if you spend most of your day listening to alternative rock or classic rock from the 70's and 80's, but are tired of the same old, same old, well you have to listen to this CD. Goo Goo Dolls continue to grow in grass roots popularity, both in the USA and in Europe. This is obviously a must have for GGD fans, and one of two CDs someone new to the real sound and capabilities of this band needs to have to appreciate this group. Get Gutterflower and get Live in Buffalo CD/DVD.

The Goo Goo Dolls have done it again. This CD is excellent! My personal favorite GGD album is "Superstar Carwash," but Gutterflower is a close second. I'm glad to hear Robby write some more songs and in my eyes, "Gutterflower" isn't a continuation of "Dizzy Up the Girl," but reminds me more of the older Goo. All the songs are packed with raw emotion and John's vocal's are in his prime. I really enjoyed hearing him sing lower in a couple of the songs. And there's so much variety! You have songs like "Up, Up, Up," "Sympathy," and "What a Scene" all on the same CD! "Gutterflower is a great buy and I reccomend it for all GGD fans.
and on a side note...a lot of people say the GGD's have sold out...this is not the case...they've matured and so has their music...end of story!
