Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Well Worth the Wait For Another Record Named Goo
This record is the best of the year with the amazing opening track; Big Machin, and the perfect closing track; Truth Is A Whisper. Not only are these the best songs on the album, but they should become the record's next two singles. Rezeznik has done it again and even Robby sang the best track by him entitled; Tucked Away, it's so good that I don't skip it like I usually do with his songs. The four year wait for this record left me worried and kept thinking that this album was going to suck, but I was dead wrong. The record has left me as a forever fan, and has actually made me want to go and see the band live. There is a big difference between this album and Dizzy Up the Girl, this one is softer but a good softer. The two albums can't and should not even be compared to one another for they are two completely diffent records. Listen to the amazing track; What A Scene and I beg of you to make it a single along with the openning and ending ones. If you don't your aren't a true Goo Goo Dolls fan.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worse then Dizzy Up The Girl?
I don't understand you people.

You can't say you're a fan of the band if you don't appreciate their efforts.

Gutterflower has done nothing but amaze me; having an edgy, almost meloncholic, mature sound.

John's voice has once again done more than impress me.

Robby has a few more songs on this CD...I'd have to say some might actually be worth a listen; but they still don't compare to John. (Sorry Robby!)

"Big Machine" - an excellent way to open their CD. A bit reminiscent of older days; it has a melodic chorus with light pop-y verses.

"Think About Me" - Starts out with just an acoustic guitar and a light drum part but gradually works it's way into a nice upbeat tempo. Reminds me of something from Dizzy Up The Girl. But it's still a very nice song.

"Here Is Gone" - The single of Gutterflower. I have to say that they could have done much better for their first Gutterflower single. It's a great song...I just don't think it was as good as some of the others.

"You Never Know" - The first Robby song of the CD. It's not that bad but I don't think it's his best.

"What A Scene" - This is almost my favorite song of the album. If it weren't for the 2 minutes of "No, no, no no no no, no etc etc" at the end of the song this could have easily been a great single. Starts out a little hardcore and has unbeleivable lyrics that make you question society. It's an amazing song and probably the closest thing to a rap song you might ever get from John Rzeznik.

"Up, Up, Up" - Don't get me started. I hate this song. (can you tell it's a Robby song?)

"It's Over" - Whoa. This is DEFINITELY my favorite of the album. John really shows off his amazing range, reaching far down on the bass clef all the way up to the higher voice you're used to. Watch out Barry White; this song's sure to make the ladies swoon!

"Sympathy" - Another radio friendly song. Reminds me of the pop songs like "Slide", "Broadway" and "Black Balloon". Definitely a great song.

"What Do You Need?" - I love this song. Period. It's a great song. No...It's better than great. I can't describe it. It's simply amazing.

"Smash" - This is pretty good...for a Robby song.

"Tucked Away" - Not bad either...for a Robby song. Definitely needs work on the lyrics though...

"Truth is a Whisper" - If the intro wasn't so long, this could have been a more hardcore, edgy single. I absolutely LOVE this song. It's my second fave. of the CD. I really wish it weren't at the end of the CD though. Parts of the chorus are actually very melodic (ok..really just the *feel this moment in you* part)but it's still a stunning song.

Don't pass this CD by. I wasn't disappointed at all by this album. In fact I like it better than Dizzy Up The Girl.

They have a much more mature sound, and still they have songs that touch breifly of their old punk sound.

This is just amazing. It's actually worth the money to go buy it instead of downloading it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Robby needs to drink more milk
`Iris' was an incredibly overplayed song. And thanks to it's overplayedness, I've learned to desperately love the GOO GOO DOLLS. And I don't love them cuz their hot. I mean, I'm a GUY, for heavens sakes. And a STRAIGHT guy on top of that. I appreciate these guys because of the reality in their music. The honesty and truthful lyrical elements in all of Rzeznik's songs, the honesty and truthfulness of his voice, the simply gorgeous melodies in his guitar, they all bring out the best of everything that I love about music.

I have to admit that this is the only album of the DOLLS that I own, but that will soon be remedied. "Gutterflower" as very strong elements all through the record... though they only appear at the sight of Rzeznik's writing skills. Robby, unfortunately, has next to no good ideas at all. All of his songs on "Gutterflower" sound way, WAY too similar to eachother, which is unfortunate, as none of them are any good. When I first read reviews of the album the were, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about the songs of Robby, I was sure they wouldn't be THAT bad. My friends, I was wrong. Robby's contributions is the reason this album gets 3 stars from me(rounded to 4, obviously).

Rzeznik, as I said, frikin ROCKS on this album. My top picks include the awesome, fast-paced `Truth is a Whisper', the softer, near-ballad `Here is Gone' and the absolutely fantastic melody of `It's Over'. These few selection epitomize the entire Rzeznik contributions to this album, and create fabulous, moody spheres of musical bliss for 3 and half minutes that EVERYBODY can an does love, I don't care what they say.

RANT MODE ON: You folks who tell those who like this music to go listen to REAL rock like METALLICA or CRADLE OF FILTH or whatever other crap not only sound immensely ridiculous, but build upon the false clichés of heavy rock music. You make heavy metal sound as retarded as you are, and that simply isn't the case. METALLICA and TooL's music is ART, but in your ridiculous quest to sound cool on Amazon.com you make the entire genre sound completely imbecilic(that means dumb). Keep your meaningless comments to yourself and just review the FREAKING albums. Retard(s). RANT MODE OFF.

This album is a really great listen, though I really don't think it was wise for me to have paid the FRIKIN SIXTEEN DOLLARS I PAID FOR IT!!! Get it for more like 10 bucks, and it'll be worth it. Johnny's got his musical intelligence, and that, apparently, is all the band needs. So get it, and skip Robby's crap, as crap it truly IS. 4 stars.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Still Rockin...
The Goo Goo Dolls just plain kick ass, Johnny is SOOOOO Rockstar. Everything by TGGD is amazing, but Gutterflower is by far their best work yet, with Dizzy Up The Girl as a close second.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A truly darker continuation of DUTG
To start I absolutely do recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys either alternative rock or any of the Goo Goo Dolls previous albums. The first time I listened the album I was somewhat unsatisfied and didnt feel I enjoyed it as much as "Dizzy" or "A boy named goo". After I had a few listens however I truly began to enjoy the album which is now one of the most listened to in my collection. While the album seems much more high energy I feel than say maybe "Boy or Dizzy" the lyrics are much more angry and condenscending than the others. The most radio friendly song and to be honest the only one I truly liked when first listening to the album is "here is gone". Thats not to say it is as powerful as "iris" but definetly a good song. The truly standout songs I feel are "Sympathy" or "What a Scene". This is truly a good album just make sure u give it a chance.
