Gutterflower is by far the best piece of work that the Goo Goo Dolls have done so far in their career. There are no words to describe how brilliant it is. It's a totally amazing album full of meaningful lyrics and edge. I could listen to it over and over and never get tired of it. This album is total perfection and amazes me each I listen to it. It's a true masterpiece and definitely deserves more than 5 stars. The only bad thing is the lack of promotion the album got compared to Dizzy Up The Girl, which is a shame since it's a wonderful work of art.

ok, 1) how can you compare bands such as 'vertical horizon' to the goo goo dolls. The goo goo dolls have consistancy, raw vocals and a totally unique sound, 'vertical horizon' are boring, pathetic and NOTHING like the goo's. 2)How can anyone possibly think John Rzeznick is a better singer than Robby Takac. I wont argue because theyre both of equal talent, however, i will say i prefer Robby Takac's vocals because they are like no other heard before. 3) gutterflower is a great album, you should buy it, a) because it has tracks such as 'big machine' which prove to be a little more experimental then others have been and because b) i say so. I'd like to end off with this - you cannot win every debate about great albums by telling us that John Rzeznick is hot, ok so he has his moments, but what about Robby Takac!?!

I like this band alot, Johnny Rezenik is not only sexy, but poetic as well. But, the other guys talents should not be overlooked, since it takes more than one to make a band. But I strongly feel that Robbie should not sing lead, the singing should be left to Johnny. He is the lead singer and there's a good reason for it. His voice is altogether smooth, deep, rough and hipnotic. This is a nice CD to compliment any small or larger Goo Goo collection.

It seems that with each passing album that the Goo Goo Dolls have become more and more of a pop-rock band. This isn't necessarily bad, but it ain't good either. Gutterflower isn't bad but it seems to have confirmed that the Goos have gone mainstream with their music. For me personally I prefer the more hard-edged sound of A Boy Named Goo, (which I think is their best album), Superstar Carwash, and Hold Me Up than the ballad driven sounds and love gone wrong lyrics of Gutterflower and Dizzy Up the Girl. Gutterflower is basically, like another reviewer said, a washed up version of Dizzy Up the Girl. The single Here Is Gone is not as good as Dizzy's Slide and the ballad Sympathy is no Iris. Maybe Johnny and the boys are succumbing to middle age 'mental' spread. Over all I'd say that that Gutterflower is ok but not great. If this had been the first album I heard from the Goos I would not have become an avid fan.

This is what good songwriting is about. The Goo Goo Dolls return with a better sense of themselves than last time. John's writing is more mature and dark this time out. There are more crunchy electric guitars taking the front rather than acoustic, except on Sympathy, but thats just an awesome song. Robby's songs are much better this time around, too. While on Dizzy Up the Girl, they were almost annoying to me, I truly enjoy them on Gutterflower. The songs are a lot less pop than on Dizzy Up the Girl, and the Goos seem much more comfortable this way. I think this is kind of a return to their pre-"Iris" music. I love this cd and suggest that anyone who has ever liked a Goo Goo Dolls song buy it.
I now usually tell the best tracks on the album, but they're all great examples of music.
