Music : Soma Holiday

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Over and over again the CD spins
See, Amazon.com serves a wonderful purpose. The reason I got this album was because of all of the great reviews I saw on here, regarding this album. Radio here sparsely plays "Breathe", so I thought this was a Modern Rock one hit wonder band. Well, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Soma Holiday is a refreshing collection of catchy songs that enable the listener to spin the entire CD without skipping a track. It's a rarity you find an album like this. This is the best album I've heard since the Foo Fighers "There is Nothing Left to Lose". My favorite songs include "Breathe", "Sustain You", "Identity", "Dim Halo", "Disappear", and "Radiance". This album is Grammy worthy. Word of mouth begins here.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Whoa
I really think that this is a band that is definitly gonna go places.. and if they don't its a shame against humanity. This is a really really really good cd in my opinion because they show all the good points of a ideal rock band; good instruments, ppl that can actually play them, brilliant lyrics, and best of all, a singer that can actually sing.. and stun you w/ amazing sound, and a raw appeal... LOVE IT!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Par for the course
After buying Greenwheel's "Soma Holiday" without hearing a note of music from it beforehand, I was nervous as I slid it into my CD player. The CD starts off very promisingly but kinda sputters soon after the beginning of the first song. It's not that Greenwheel's music is bad. On the contrary, they show some definite promise. But they seem altogether in a hurry to finish the album. The first 9 tracks register times around 3 minutes and 30 seconds with nary an instrumental solo despite five bandmembers. Also, the vocals on the choruses are done in a manner that is only a halfway decent Default impersonation with a lot of shouting for lack of a better word. The funny thing is, when the songs are slowed down as they are for the final three cuts, the lead singer shows some nice vocal stylings.

Greenwheel has not, in my opinion, hit the mark with this CD. They have laid the groundwork for a promising future and are a band with noticeable talent. This CD gets 3 stars but their potential is 5 star

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - why now?
I picked this CD up on a whim a few months ago. I hadn't heard any of their music or read anything about them. It's not unusual for me to buy a CD 'blind' - a move that has most recently exposed me to bands like The Weakerthans, Jimmy Eat World, Dilinger Four and Jack Johnson.
Soma Holiday was my biggest miss since Skinny Puppy's 'Too Dark Park' in the summer of '91. These guys seem like one of those 'hometown hopeful' bands where everyone around them thinks they're the best thing going and just can't wait for them to blow up. It's not just that the music and lyrics were completely uninspiring; it seems as though they were also utterly uninspired. Song after song just went on like the steady drone of a refrigerator. The music was completely formulaic, as well, with each song building off the guitar intro like clockwork.
My only question is not why do these guys make music (hats off to anyone making noise), but why did a record company fund this band; especially now, four or five years after bands like Creed already cornered this sound that bands like Pearl Jam abandoned years before that? It's not that Greenwheel offer nothing new; it's that they don't even offer a fresh take on a tired idea.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ryan's killer voice...
I purchased the cd after finding out that they were gonna be touring with OLP. I figured i should get familiar with the music before i saw them, well that was 4 months ago and i have been listening to it ever since. I have seen them live 3 times since and i am still amazed at the talent these young guys have. It's definitely worth buying!!
