Read the product reviews on Amazon and other consumer sites before deciding to take a chance on this player. The average reviewer seems to have had some bad luck with this unit. Can't say the same. Bought mine as a refurbished unit directly from HK about 6 months ago for under $100.00 delivered with a 1 year warranty. Figured I couldn't go wrong. Well, this "blind bet" paid off big! The changer operation is a little noisy but smooth and reliable, a bit slow but looks good. The sound is something else entirely. Surprisingly, I found the RCA outputs produce the best sound quality. All CD's (it's not Mp3 compatible but I don't have any anyway!) sound better on the HK FL8385 than on my Onkyo DX-C390. Onkyo's good but this HK sounds much better. The real "sound treat" is when you play an HDCD. It's almost analog! It's ashamed that most of the reviewers have had bad luck with this CD changer. My experience has been otherwise. It's a good changer. IMHO, this unit honestly rates 5 stars.

I bought this partly on the reputation of the Harmon/Kardon name. I was very disappointed. Very soon after installation, the unit would hang and stop playing disks. When it did play the disks, there was a lot of mechanical noise that could be heard when standing close to the unit. It also frequently would fail to play disks that were fine on other players. I sent my unit in for a warranty replacement. The new unit displayed the very same problems within 5 minutes of turning it on. From reading other reviews and from my experience, it is obvious that the FL8385 is a defective product and should be avoided.

Again, I purchased HK avr and loved it, so I purchased matching dvd and cd players. For the money you can beat it.

It took me two units(same problems you see elsewhere), three shipping charges, and a lot of patience, but I did finally get a unit that worked. However...
The rest of this is based on a "somewhat" working unit.
The unit's disc change fuction is loud. The mechanics inside sound like they are literally grinding together every single rotation. While playing at low volume the reading of the cd isn't too subtle either. I would say its similar to a skip, like some sort of turbulance. The cd plays fine, just a clicking noise while its playing. It does seem to reduce as the unit "warms up", but at low volumes it is still very audible. On occasion you have to persuade it to take a look at a disc again as it can't or won't read it. Gives the impression that the player knows there is a disc, has problems, gives up and moves on to the next one.
Harmon's cd player does deliver great sound through the speakers (once a trouble free unit is found). The few high def cds I own really fill the room matched up with the rest of my system.
Overall a poorly built machine. I bought this unit despite the reviews of others because I wanted a unit to match my HK receiver. Don't make the same mistake.

Our first unit(manufactured 4/06) had all the problems described in other reviews. I contacted HK's tech help via the web and within two days I had a return authorization and six days later a new unit (manufactured 5/07) that is flawless. It works exceptionally well with our new HK AVR 140 and produces the best sound I have heard from a cd player. The tuner and CD player replaced another Harman Kardon tuner and cd palyer that were 12 years old. What a difference!
I'd buy Harman Kardon again without a doubt. They really backed up their product.
