this cd changer is just plain amazing, the cd changer makes your cd's sound so much better and clearer than any where else, this is a great addition to any stereo and a much greater addition to a Harmon Kardon Amplifier

i've had hk products since the 80's and generally like their products. but this is the second hk cd that broke just after a few months of light use (the first one after a couple of years). cd should last longer than that, i believe. i want to stick with hk to have the same brand name in the house, but unsure if i should throw good money after bad any more.

I bought this unit about two years ago, and I've finally had it. Aside from the very rare lockup when in random mode, it worked well for about a year. After that, it would periodically pull the same trick, with growing frequency - play a few tracks in full random mode, then just forget what to do - devolving into a series of useless clicks and refuse to do anything at all until shut down for a few minutes then restarted. I was convinced that my laser had gotten out of alignment somehow, and had just about resigned myself to spending the 80-100 dollars to getting it fixed, when I decided to jump on here and check to see if others have had similar problems. I'm glad I did. I just ordered a Sony unit through Amazon for not all that much more than I would have spent "repairing" my HK unit.
Having been a long time owner of HK equipment, I still think they make superior sounding audio products, but if they don't work, what's the point?

Often doesn't read disk. In "Random" mode, often stops after a few songs. Sometimes will play for a while, then stop reading disk. Even when it plays, it often continues to make the "chirping" noise it makes while attempting to read disk prior to playing.
I spent full retail on one of these, along with a receiver, and neither works properly (or often). $800.00 wasted. I would never buy a Harman Kardon product again.
One tip: If you have problems, unplug the unit for a few minutes, then plug it back in. It sometimes resets itself--at least enough to get your disk(s) out.
