My son gave me the first season for Christmas, and I watched it over and over again. It brought back so many memories of my childhood, as Superman was my hero back in the 50's. As soon as the second season was released, I ordered it. What a collection! The original black and white seasons were the best. When the series changed to color, the episodes also changed, and were more silly than adventureous. The black and white days, on these first two seasons are the best!!! I would highly reccomend these two collections to anyone from the baby boom era. It will surely bring back memories.

Many of the retrospectives that are being released don't stand the test of time very well, but this set is an exception. There still is no better Superman than George Reeves; he acheives a true gentleness in many of these episodes that is missing from later attempts. And, he also evinces a quiet strength and sense of vengeance when called for. Sure, Perry White is still too blustery and Lois Lane a bit too smarmy, but I will tell you: if you take an objective look at Jimmy Olsen you will see better acting than occured on television until many years later.
As cynical as we have all become, I challenge anyone not to get sentimental when Superman has to say good bye to the "Dog Who Knew Superman" and get out the hankies if you choose to watch the episode where the blind girl wins a trip around the world. The villains are genuinely frightening, the clowns are funny, and the irony here is ladled out very carefully-a subtlety that we could use more often these days.
Looking at them fifty years later, one does catch the special effects weaknesses-Superman takes off from the same three places no matter what the episode-and the bare ones budget they were working under kept the sets Spartan, but for the quality of the narrative, the acting, and the sense of Saturday morning with a bowl of cereal, "The Adventures of Superman" is as entrancing as it ever was. How many of you can still recite the opening lines. "Look! Up in the sky!......

These shows bring back so many great memories of my childhood, a time when we could accept a super hero so easily. And of course, there are the towels around our necks that became capes, learning to recite the opening lines perfectly (faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, etc.) and my kid brother jumping up and down on the bed to learn to fly, and receiving the first stitches in our family when he cracked his forehead on the dresser! Worth the price, get the whole series!
