DVD : Superman: Brainiac Attacks - (Original Movie)

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What the heck happened??
Okay-First of all, I rented this before I read any reviews on it. Thank God for that! I would have been extremely irritated to have actually spent full price for this excuse of the Man of Steel. Being a huge die hard fan of Batman: TAS, Superman, and Justice League, I thought this film would be great. I own the Batman/Superman movie and thought this would be simliar-how disappointed I was! The voices in this film are ridiculous, the story is boring-Superman gets shot by a beam of laser light from an outer space satellite for about 1o minutes. It gets really old. The style is stiff and the voices of Brainiac and Luthor are ridiculous. Aside from looking like the characters-nothing else was the same. The animation-which has always been great, was poor this time around as well. It was like someone decided to make a Superman movie over the weekend and whipped this thing up in a couple of months. To the people who made this waste of time-If it isn't broke-don't try and fix it. Superman, Justice League, etc...did well for many years for a reason-there is no need to change it. Not to mention-the continuity problems. This movie came out after the last season of Justice League Unlimited. If you know the story, then you also realize, Brainiac is gone (Probably for good), and Luthor has no money-is on the run from the law and just banded together a group of villians to take over the world. How is he back at his old job, in a nice suit in Metroplolis (which was quite badly damaged by the way)?
Anyway-please do not waste your time with this piece of work. The producers/Directors of this cartoon should be ashamed!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Beyond bad
The animated Superman series was a criminally underrated cartoon that never achieved the popularlity of the smashing animated Batman series before it, so naturally a new and original animated film would be more than welcome, but nothing will prepare you for just how unbelievably bad this is. Superman: Brainiac Attacks starts off on the right foot by once again getting Tim Daly to voice the Man of Steel, and Dana Delany reprises the voice of Lois Lane, but the first thing that will give fanboys a groan is seeing that Clancy Brown has been replaced by Powers Boothe as Lex Luthor, and Corey Burton has been replaced by Lance Henriksen as Brainiac. Now, no offense to Boothe and Henriksen who have always been character favorites no matter what they've done, but they miss the mark as Luthor and Brainiac. Most of the blame goes to the writing, which features so amazingly atrocious dialogue that you'll think you've been transported back to the era of the Superfriends, but even that show was never this bad. The tone of the original Superman series was never dark (at least not as dark as the Batman series), but it took itself seriously and provided some great action and had a heart to it; none of which is carried over here. Do yourself a favor, avoid this at all costs, regardless of how much a fan of the DC comics characters or cartoons you are, don't even give this the time of day.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Super...WHAT THE?!?
I hate to have to agree with many of the other reviewers, but, upon adding this film to my Superman:The Animated Series collection, all that worked for me was the ACTION, the return of original voice talents of TIM DALY and DANA DELANY, and the fact that this marks the 1st Superman animated movies. The action was there, however, Duane Capizzi does an even bigger hatchet job on Superman via the storyline than he did on The Batman series...Lex Luthor cracking jokes? Braniac showing a sense of emotion? Get real? Powers Boothe, known for his portrayal of Jim Jones in the Guyana Tragedy, would've made a perfect replacement as Lex Luthor had it not been for the mediocre sense of humor...Boothe was abused in my opinion, and Lance Henriksen would've been perfect for any role but Braniac's...the original voice talent reminded me of Mr. Freeze from the 90's Batman series...cold, calloused, calculated, no emtions,etc...Braniac, in this film was laughing. No way.

To make a long story short, this one's only for die hard fans of Superman vol. 1-3 and for completists like myself. Otheriwse, you may want to rent this one first. A better investment would be Superman:The Animated Series vol 1-3, Justice League, The Complete Classic Superman(1940's) or even The Tick vs Season One for that matter.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Superman vs Quality Control
Contrary to what a kindly old grandfather or someone from North Hollywood thinks, the reason fans are so vitriolic about this movie has nothing to do with wanting it to "adhere to some strict code of Superman mythology arcana." They take easy pot shots at the fans and miss the point -- Bruce Timm and company set a very high standard with the Batman, Superman, and Justice League animated series, and this movie is nowhere near that standard.

As 99% of the posts have mentioned, the script is so bad it's insulting. The Bruce Timm series worked at an all ages level, while as for this movie I wouldn't recommend it to anyone over 4 years old. It's not just a slap in the face to the fans- let's look at this objectively- it's a slap to anyone with an ounce of intelligence. A bad script coupled with inconsistant animation easily defeats Superman here.

To level set my review: I think Dwayne Capizzi has done a decent job with the new Batman -- yes, while it is simplistic compared to the old series, it still captures the essence of what/who Batman is, and I like the creative reimaging of the villains. I was expecting the same quality here, but apparently Dwayne inherited a mess and couldn't save it.

Go pick up the other 3 series to enjoy great writing and quality animation by people who care about their craft.
As for this movie, looks like Brainiac attacked the quality control folks at the WB, and they lost...

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Could've Been A Great Film But Misses The Mark
After reading all the hype about how bad this film was, I decided to buy it at a discounted price at a local video store.

The story itself is actually not that bad! From what I understand, it was actually worse than what we know before last minute changes were made. While it was a good call to get Tim Daly back as Superman and Dana Delany as Lois Lane, it still wasn't enough to improve the movie.

Got to agree with the other reviewers on Lex Luthor! Whoever wrote his characterization for this flick made him more like the Lex Luthor from the Christopher Reeve films and not the one we've grown accustomed too in the animated versions. Luthor was just a goofball and wasn't menacing. That alone is what gets my low marks for this film. Also, whoever voiced Braniac (while not bad) just didn't hit the mark for me.

Overall, it wasn't a total loss and I have seen worse but I have to give this one a thumbs down. Even THE BATMAN Vs. Dracula was better than this! That statement alone should give you an idea of how low this film is. I'd recommend this one only as a rental or buy at a reduced price.
