WOW! They BLEW IT! I have to say that I'm NOT surprised. With the passing of composers like Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Bernard Herrmann & Miklos Rosza there are only a few REAL composers left working in film scoring. John Williams, of course leads the pac, followed closely by James Horner and John Barry, Ennio Morricone & Philip Glass. Then we have a few who stand out more than occasionally like John Scott, Laurence Rosenthal, Richard Robbins, and a few others. A few of the newcomers are putting forth some excellent efforts like Don Davis, David Arnold, and occasionally Hans Zimmer. It's interesting to note that all of the top composers listed above are older and come from a classical school of training or even jazz background. Now we come to today's composers: James Newton Howard, Howard Shore, Marco Beltrami, Danny Elfman, John Powell etc. These guys are really just sound designers, not really composers. They are loud, soft, fast and slow, and without the film, there "music" falls dead born. Mostly getting there feet wet in the 80's and have pop music backgrounds and if you look at there beginnings, they weren't very good then either. They have managed to wedge themselves into the industry thru the buddy system and usually in the company of other mediocre talent as well. Now mind you, there have been some GREAT film composers that have come out of pop music, i.e. John Barry, Giorgio Moroder and Paul McCartney are the best known. But again, they come from 60's and 70's pop music era. I cant help but think that something happened in the musical idioms of the 80's that has left the new composers of that time and now with no inspirational ear for melody, or emotion or even originality. And thus, we are left with more forgettable scores for some of the biggest films of the last 20 years, i.e. SPIDERMAN, HULK, OMEN 2006, XMEN, FANTSTC 4, LORD OF THE RINGS, and most unfortunately SUPERMAN RETURNS. I read the excited reviews of these scores and it saddens me because I know that the talent is out there and perhaps a big part of the problem is in the knowledge of the producers, directors, composers and yes, the public at large, simply have no knowledge of the masterworks that exist out there, and we as a public must demand that filmmakers produce better quality scripts, acting, and music. Until we do, we will get the flashy, sometimes competent but empty music. Listen to the above composers mentioned, and then listen to Danny Elfman, John Ottman, James Newton Howard, Marco Beltrami etc. You'll never listen to them the same way again. John Williams labors and Agonizes over his melodies, they only sound simple and easy. Lets get to work composers, and leave a true legacy of beautiful & inspired music for this and the generations to come.

Where is the Planet Krypton theme in the soundtrack? That is a must have for any Superman soundtrack. Other than that it was an ok soundtrack it didn't really pull me in. John Williams should have continued his role as the music composer he knows how to do it.

Does John Ottman know what a memorable theme is? Doubtful.
None of this music stands out: it's all ambient filler. None of these tracks stand out (other than the musical gems lifted from Williams original score... O, why couldn't Williams have scored this film?). Ottman's score is like listening to the music from Deep Space 9 (I have no idea who wrote that either... Ottman, for all I know). None of this is memorable. None of this is something that you'll find yourself humming later, or discussing with others, or trying to recapture on the piano, and the beauty of a melody plays in your head. Not Ottman's score. Utterly forgettable.
John Williams' original score to the 1978 film Superman is unsurpassed as a work of cinematic musical genious. It's chilling how brilliant this work is. There are times I listen to it and marvel at how someone can have such an uncanny command of the orchestral medium, and can so expertly explore the emotional realm of music, and do it so cleanly, so easily, so brilliantly. Check out Williams' Superman score, not this horrible Ottman score. This pabulum is a joke.

This soundtrack is well done. I really enjoy listening to all the songs, but my fav. ones are #1, #6, and the last one. but its all good. I listened to it on my way to the movie with my friends and all of us wearing our superman shirts!! Well done Mr. Ottaman, maybe Williams can do the next one. That would be even better, even though this one is great!!! Go buy it huh!! I actually give it 4 1/2 stars not 3.

This is by far the best movie soundtrack I have bought yet. All tracks are very enjoyable to listen to. Keeping John Williams score on this movie was one of the best decisions they made at getting Superman back on the Big Screen. You can hear touches of his original music score throughout the CD.
