Toys : Transformers Optimus Prime 20th Anniversary Figure

In association with Amazon.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Optimus Prime Review
Arrived exactly as it was pictured. Still in the box and don't know when I'll open it. Big fans of the original series will appreciate the attention to detail and devotion to the series. It's a great piece to have if you remember the cartoons growing up.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Optimus Prime for Bryan
This is a Christmas present for my 28 year old son who still has wonderful memories of playing with Transformers and the Transformer cartoon and movies. He will enjoy introducing Optimus Prime to his children!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An Impressive Action Figure For Your Collection
After seeing the new movie that came out this summer, I just had to round up a cool Optimus Prime toy. Instead of going with one of the movie versions, I opted for this one mainly because it's got a lot of diecast metal in it. To me, that's just a hallmark of a toy that's meant to be handled, whereas a lot of the stuff put out nowadays is almost entirely plastic (this one is composed of plastic also, just not entirely). It's an excellent collectible, but I admit I haven't stressed it by allowing any of the nieces or nephews to have their way with it, so I'm not sure of its durability.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - just..wow.
I was never a fan of Transformers, not because I didn't like it, but because I wasn't old enough to be around it. But this Optimus Prime changes all that. The moment I got it out of the box, he was satisfyingly heavy, and tall- at 12 inches. The detail also stood out- his mouthplate moves with the help of a button on the back, his fingers are moveable (but the fingers themselves will forever be curved), vents that open when he steps, a chamber for the Matrix of Leadership (which lights up quite brightly), and a pop-up datacom thing from his arm. Just from seeing this, in all his pristine and sheer awesomeness, I am inspired to try to watch some Transformers just to see him in action. Anyway, he looks immaculate in robot mode, and everything is well-designed. It IS die-cast construction, but not ENTIRELY. Just some parts, and other parts might be plastic. Specifically, most of the semi truck's cab (in robot form, his torso) is die-cast, as is his legs (but not feet). His transformation is very smooth, though it may be hard to figure out at first (as a first-time transformer, it took a few days to figure him out). The instructions are just pictures, and don't offer much help besides arrows and highlighting which parts have changed. After you get the hang of it, however, his transformation takes maybe a few minutes at most. Optimus comes with a plastic base and speaks some phrases from the movie, along with two guns and an attachable axe that can replace one of his fists. The lowdown:

PROS

-simply GREAT detail and design, you won't find a toy of this quality for this price anywhere else. DISPLAY WORTHY in any form. A minor gripe is that not all the pieces fit together absolutely snugly in truck form on the front of the cab. Not too badly, but a bit noticeable.

-he hasn't fallen from my bookshelf yet, but he is very durable. During the transformation he withstood many vigorous pulls, twists, etc. Any pieces that do break off are re-attachable, so don't scream bloody murder if you snap off a piece.

-impressive height, so he can tower over anything else you'll be putting on display (asides from tall trophies)

-is fully poseable and has many movable joints. His hips can twist and pivot, his arms can be contorted into many great statue poses, individually moving fingers, etc.

CONS

-Optie comes with two guns- a Megatron pistol (looks like a normal pistol with a rifle stock and scope [which are detachable], and his own Ion Blaster. He doesn't have as good a grip with the big Ion handle as he does with the pistol.

-transformation is quite a challenge, and instructions are vague (pictures and arrows with highlighted parts, but no text instructions [similar to Lego instructions, but this is harder]).

-his Energon axe (which replaces one of his fists) doesn't attach too well.

-the matrix of Leadership doesn't light up so easily (I have no idea how to get it to light up; it has lit up before though), and when inside his chest it gets in the way of the transformation. It is detachable, however.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best looking Optimus Prime toys ever
I was surfing through Amazon's Transformer toy section one day and found a pretty decent looking Optimus Prime toy, which was the Voyager Classic figure that sells for $20. I thought this was a cool little toy that would look great on my desk, but as I read the reviews and saw some pictures I noticed that this was not a toy that a fan of the original series would buy. Then I noticed this 20th anniversary Optimus Prime and was immediately struck with amazement. The level of detail on this toy is excellent, in robot mode and truck mode. When I received it in the mail I was even more astonished on the actual size of the toy (12 inches tall). This by far is the biggest and best looking Transformers toy I have ever purchased.

The figure comes with three weapons, two great looking and fully detailed hand weapons an axe and a removable autobot matrix of leadership. The two hand weapons are the Megatron Pistol, and the original Iron Blaster. The hands and fingers on this figure are movable and keep the weapons very well intact. It also comes with a stand which when you push a button can speak six different phrases such as: "Autobots transform and rollout," "Megatron must be stopped," and "All we need is a little energon and a lot of luck."

I got to admit that this was my first Optimus Prime toy, and it took me a while to transform it from robot to vehicle mode. While in truck mode I was pleasantly surprised on how sweet the semi looks. The downside is that there is no trailer included, but hey it's still a great, if not the best looking Transformer ever.

Another thing that I found interesting is how durable this thing really is. I had it on robot mode one day on top of its stand and on the very top of my 6 foot entertainment center, when all of a sudden my little nephew jumps really hard and I see my Optimus Prime toy drop all the way to the carpeted floor. Needless to say I was very upset, as I noticed that the right foot and leg came apart. Luckily I was able to put it back together with little effort. I am really glad I purchased this toy and not some $[...] knock-off.

In the end, sure this toy is a bit expensive, but if you are fan of the show and a fan of Optimus Prime, then this is surely a must have action figure.
