Here, ladies and gentlemen, is the classic that helped inspire director Christopher Nolan to create the gem that is Batman Begins (2005). This film is so inspirational and legendary, that director Bryan Singer couldn't even come up with a good way to reinvent everyone's favorite superhero for a new generation, without sticking to similar images and themes from this film. Sure, there was modern technology and what-not in his film, but Richard Donner's Superman (1978) is so well-known and well-made that a complete redo was way too hard to conceive. Don't get me wrong, Superman Returns (2006) is no sequel to Superman or its sequel Superman II, but the effect that Donner's Superman had on the world is clearly shown in the recent re-boot, which really takes what it needs from Superman and its sequel, and goes on from there. Returns is really a homage, but I guess it could be a remake of sorts. But as the title of my review suggests, Superman was the true beginning for GOOD comic book based movies and tv shows, and not the ridiculous, yet classical, George Reeves and Adam West efforts from the 50's and 60's. This film has aged in certain ways, at least in my opinion, but for the most part it still holds up to modern films, and is where anyone who is new to the story of Superman should start out, before going on to any other adaptations, save for Smallville.

Superman - the movie is the best superman movie. I am a kid and I read Superman and Action Comics and Superman is my favorite superhero. I never have seen the superman movies in theaters because i was never born then, so this is definitely the best for me. This DVD comes with the orginal theater release of the movie and the 2000 release of the movie with 10 more minutes of footage. They are both digitally remastered so his costume isn't green (yes i have seen it on a 20 year old tape). The extra two discs come packed with 2 documentaries about the making of the movie, one that was just made and another that was hosted by Christopher Reeve himself 20 years before. You will also get deleted scenes and screen tests too. Hope this review was helpful. Good Night.

I've been waiting for this ever since the first VHS release of this movie! Why? IT INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL RELEASE. No longer do I have to suffer through the "bonus footage" re-added for the network TV premiere and every previous consumer media release, which only serve to validate my belief that there is a reason that films have editors.

I couldn't sell my old versions fast enough.

If you like the added footage, it's got that version too. Very nice packaging job as well.

And I haven't even gotten into the other bonus material, I'm having such a blast re-living my original theatrical experience!

Superman-The Movie is a one of a kind film that isn't hardly made anymore. The movie is a classic, it hasn't aged at all and it is never boring (no matter how many times I watch it). The cast is perfect for the story and the story itself is excellent. There is just a really great scene towards the end of the movie when Superman gets really angry. You can literally feel the rage coming off the screen.

There are just so many special effects in this movie that are simply breath-taking, especially if you compare it to the films of the same year and decade. Just the ability to make Superman fly was an amazing stunt, but there are so many other things in the film that are equally cool. Some of my favorite scenes of the film are the helicopter scene, then there is the scene when Superman goes through the Earth's core and just the special effects used during Lex Luthor's test of Superman. It is just cool to see the bullets bounce off of the Man of Steel.

Overall, this is just a beautiful film that is totally worth buying, especially with all of the extras this DVD has.

Thirty years later Superman remains the greatest superhero movie ever made, and this 4-Disc set covers every aspect of the film you could want -- both an extended cut plus the theatrical release, plus so many extras you could spend days going through them all. In-depth and detailed, a nice look behind the scenes, and a pristine transfer -- everything this terrific movie deserves.
