If Superman can turn back time at his whim, why go through the time and effort of fighting villains at all? Time travel is such a cheat in story-telling. And here's a thought: If Superman turned back time in The Movie, thus undoing all the damage caused by the missiles, then shouldn't the rocket that destroyed the Phantom Zone in this cut of Superman II also have been undone? Time travel. End Superman: The Movie this way, and it's a bit annoying, but okay. End the sequel the same way? Really silly if you ask me.
Then again, we have the "magic kiss" of the Lester version. Either way you go, sheesh.
That said, Donner's cut is too problematic. I can see why they replaced him with Lester. Lester's cut isn't perfect either, but it is preferable to me. Rent this if you're just curious to see what you're missing, but don't buy it. If you do buy it, you'll regret it. Then you'll have to fly around the earth super fast thus reversing its rotation thus reversing time all so you can get your money back. Save yourself the hassle.

Hey everybody. Remember my review of the Richard Lester version of Superman II? Well, I just saw the Richard Donner Cut and it was a huge improvement over the theatrical release. The plot is virtually the same. It picks up where the first left off, but is more in-depth in showing what happened to one of the missiles Superman dragged into outer space in the first movie. The explosion frees General Zod, Ursa, and Nod (please see my Lester version review for more details). The effects may sometimes be CGI, but remained similar to the first for the most part. The majority of the dumb gags were omitted in favor of a more serious tone like the first. The only two that remained were that careless kid at Niagara Falls and the scared mother with the baby carriage about to get crushed by debris until Superman saved her. The back-story on Lois searching for Clark Kent's secret identity as Superman is pulled off better. Lois discovers his secret by doodling glasses and a business suit on his newspaper picture. Instead of Superman tripping on a pelt and landing in the fireplace without a scorch (which is stupid), Lois dupes him with a blank in a gun. Big Improvement. For the sake of the continuity with Returns, Superman and Lois slept with each other before he becomes normal instead of the other way around, which is how their son in Returns was conceived, and the process of Superman becoming normal was less freaky. The big fight has improved as well and omitted the overused ice cream gag and the stupid man laughing on the phone while being blown away. The Fortress of Solitude is more detailed. The Marlon Brando footage was restored and showed how Superman restored his powers with Jor-El's help. Instead of using that convoluted mind-scrambling kiss to erase Lois' memory of the whole ordeal, he uses his time travel power again that looks like spinning Earth in reverse which looks more complex than the previous entry, and re-imprisons the depowered Zod, Ursa, and Nod in the Phantom Zone forever instead of leaving them to die, as well as fixing everything. Well, almost everything. The only plot hole is that Clark gets back at the bully after spinning Earth backwards, but it would be less confusing if it was the other way around. Nonetheless, it is another worthy addition to the film series, almost on par with the first, and better than the Lester cut or some of the later films I previously reviewed. Check it out.

Just finished watching this movie and it was FAR, FAR less entertained than the theatrical version.
Gone is the cool Eiffel Tower scene (replace by Donner's choppy opening to link it to Superman I).
Lois Lane finds him out by much less interesting means (by shooting Clark Kent...really, Donner?).
Gone is the romantic scene where Superman travels the world to get flowers etc for Lois Lane.
Spolier coming up...Superman "undoes" everything by spinning the earth backwards - one of the lamest scenes in Superman I.
If I could return this DVD, I would.

It is almost a completely different movie than the theatre (Lester cut) version. Perhaps this version makes sense to Donner, but it is far less entertaining than the Lester version. There are many continuity problems and plot inconsistencies. The movie appears flat and lifeless. The ending is absolutely horrible!
Only buy this version if you're really into THAT into superman or film making. It contains interesting footage which has never been seen before.

This is a great dvd from the superman series that put's
back footage from the original director RICHARD DONNER
who originally directed superman one,and two, before being
replaced by THE BEATLES A HARD DAYS NIGHT DIRECTOR RICHARD LESTER.
It also includes the original story.and scenes which were filmed
by MARLON BRANDO,GENE HACKMAN, who for financial reasons were
taken out. While LESTER'S version is still very good and has
most of the footage directed by DONNER. DONNERS original ending and
opening scenes are put back. Looks fantastic in the BLURAY version.
