my son is 6 and has been in the chess club for the past 7 months. he knows the moves and the pieces so i wasn't nervous about getting his this set. he knew right away which piece was what and played without any problems. i didn't notice any funny plastic smell and even though the pieces look like pewter, they are durable plastic, which is just fine with him and me. it's a good set and it made him happy and he can't wait to take the set to school and show it off to his buddies.

My 13 year old son really enjoyed receiving the Transformers chess set for his birthday. My only disappointment was that the pieces were plastic rather than some sort of metal. It is neat that the pieces all have the traditional labels on their bottoms to help younger children learn the fundamentals of chess while having a cool & popular game to play. All-in-all, a good value for buyers.

I was nervous we would not know what piece did what.The piece are marked what tradtional chess piece they represent.Great for all types of chess players!

- Not as impressive as hoped for
This is an okay chess sets. The pieces are not as nice as I was hoping for. They are a semi flexible plastic. The details just look messy. It is fine for a transformer fan, but falls short for good chess play.

Bought for my 7-year-old chess lover as a birthday gift.

Minor annoyances:

1) The pieces look like pewter but are really plastic. However, they seem sturdy and none have broken yet.

2) I find it difficult to tell the difference between some of the pieces; there is a chess icon on the bottom of each piece for reference. I have to constantly look for the icon to tell which piece it is. On the other hand, my son knows the transformer pieces perfectly!

Overall, my son loves the transformers chess set and plays with it every day.
