I have to rate the film a "3" for the excellent effects, the true-to Superman heroics, and the smoothness of the storyflow.
What I HATE, is that he has been demeaned into an average Joe, because we see his son by Lois is illegitimate. I know that is "normal" morality in 2008, but it is still offensive to some of us.
Superman always had high ethics, and consideration for Lois, as well as all of humanity - but in this era, he would sleep with her, get her pregnant, and not marry her?
What happened to the sense of responsibility and the x-ray-eyes?? I couldn't believe he would not have known before flying off to Krypton.
Is that how his foster mom and daddy Jor-El would have raised him?
Worse, the 5 y/o boy is sickly, a little diva of asthma medicine, health drinks, and overprotective mothering - though he does once show super strength as he is having an asthma attack!
That line "truth, justice, and the American way" got changed. It is now "and all that stuff." Patriotic, no? Someone must be worried our American icon would offend moviegoers by *acting* American.
Again, this degrades the original superman from his idealistic status.
His mortality got emphasized, when a blade of broken Kryptonite got inside him...not sure how I feel about Lois and her partner rescuing him.
It was very dramatic. Luthor was cruel and brutal - so, I would not let young kids see Superman beaten and bloody, about to die in the ocean.
We did see the super-selfless man of steel rally to save us from Luthor's plan, at even greater peril to his life. But maybe, losing Lois to a regular man, he is more suicidal than in other movies?
It was nice to see the softer side of Superman, but I was very uncomfortable with his continued affections towards Lois. It was as if he wanted to lure her away, and persuade her to be unfaithful to the guy. This was too much like he wanted her to cheat on her husband. Emotional adultery leads to physical infidelity, as the "cheaters" show proves.
That would definitely *not* be worthy of the virtuous Superman. He is supposed to be "above" regular humanity, remember?
So, a toss-up. I'm glad I didn't buy it. I was sad to see Superman not be so super anymore. But the actors were all good.

I was really hoping this movie to be great but is only ok. And please no nore Lex Luthor. They can make a great superman movie without luthor as main criminal ( doomsday anyone )

I have seen all the originals, all of Smallville, and most of the cartoons. This was a well made movie. Very much like the stuff mentioned above. There was a few twists they could have done without but still very good. Blu-ray totally the way to go looked amazing.

Saw this on cable and my little boy discovered Superman. Had to get it for him to keep and he loves it. It's a little long for kids- he usually does not make it through the whole film. But it's pretty tame as far as violence and focuses on being good and doing the right thing. Good messages for kids.

As blasphemous as it might be to say it, I like this cast, this director, this film a good deal more than the original. Metropolis feels like it did in the 1930's cartoons. Superman flies and soars as he never has. Lois Lane is bitchy, as she should be. Lex Luthor is perfectly sinister. But I think jimmy is the best cast of them all, personally.
This is a film to add to your blu-ray collection for sure. No questions asked. It may not be the perfect film but it is beautiful to look at and well acted. Brian Singer gave up X-Men 3 to do this one and I think it shows. X-Men 3 was awful and Superman Returns was excellent.
