Martha Kent comes down with a life threatening illness after burying the key to Clark's spaceship in the cellar. Strange spores created by the spaceship's radiation affect even Clark in this episode but not quite as badly as Martha.

While at the hospital, Dr. Helen Bryce, Lex's new girlfriend, discovers to the surprise of Jonathan Kent that Martha is pregnant. Martha was told years ago she could never be pregnant. Apparently Clark's ship somehow healed her.

A disease control team searches the Kent farm making the Kents very nervous, but Clark is able to get the ship out of the farm before they started their search. They do however, find the key that Martha buried.

Clark comes down with the sickness and Helen is able to take a blood sample. Which would normally be impossible due to Clark's super tough skin, but Clark's sickness seems to sap Clark of his super abilities.

Jonathan goes after the key to hopefully get Clark's ship to make Clark and Martha better before it's too late for Martha. The disease control team had put the key under lock and key with miltary guard. Clark disobeys and ends up meeting Jonathan there. Both escape, and outside the hospital parking lot, the ship comes to life. Emitting energy and light that moves into the hospital only moments after Helen declares Martha dead. Miraculously, Martha revives to the amazement of the hospital staff and Helen.

Lex Luthor bribes a member of the hospital staff to obtain Martha's file. However, Helen stays honest and refuses to discuss the Kents with Lex, staying true to doctor, patient confidentiality.

The show ends on a high note with a concert by the Steadman at the Talon, and a plug for the new Smallville soundtrack as Pete hands Clark a copy of the new Talon Mix and Clark exclaims," Thanks Pete!".
