This episode shows us what happened to the telepathic boy Ryan from the first season's episode "Stray" . Apparently it's not good, as the episode begins with Ryan hooked to a chair in a hospital performing telepathic tricks for a scientist. Ryan manages to contact Clark on the phone and Clark goes to investigate. Clark rescues Ryan and takes him to the Luthor mansion, but when he arrives at the Kent farm he finds the sheriff and the scientist demanding Clark produce Ryan by 9 am the next day.
Lex shows up the next morning to save the day when his own court orders that allow the Kents to keep Ryan temporarily. Later at the Luthor mansion, Ryan has an attack and passes out. Ryan ends up at the hospital where the doctors find out that Ryan has a tumor in his head which is killing him.
Lex finds a doctor that could operate on Ryan but there isn't a way he can be reached in time. Clark super speeds across the country to find the doctor and hopefully bring him back to Smallville . He succeeds and the doctor operates on Ryan, but it only buys Ryan a few extra days of which he spends with Clark and his friends.
