Forget who shot J.R. , who shot Lionel Luthor? At the beginning of this episode someone shoots Lionel Luthor at the mansion. But who did it? That's the question that has to be solved during this episode.
The first suspect is Jonathan Kent who is found in his truck asleep with a gun and a bottle of booze. Most unKent like. That's like watching Ward Cleaver rob a liquor store. Clark begins his own investigation into the matter to clear Jonathan. Lana makes Jonathan's case worse by revealing she overheard Jonathan and Lionel arguing that night before the shooting. A watch given to Martha from Lionel is found by the police. This gives them motive. Perhaps, Jonathan became jealous. Also Jonathan claimed to have only one beer, but the Sheriff claimed his alcohol test came back 2.0.
The next suspect is Dominic, Lionel Luthor's top employee. Who seems to believe Lionel is grooming him to take over Luthor Corp. Lex Luthor really doesn't dig this guy, and he even accuses Lex of wanting his dad dead. He even tells the sheriff his suspicions. Lex believes Dominic wanted Lionel dead to protect his interests in the company from being given to Lex. Did Lex Luthor do it? Apparently Lionel was attempting to take over Lex's company. Did Lex attempt to murder his father to stop him. When Clark and Pete get close to the trail, A trucker runs Pete and Clark off the road, and shoots a bullet into the gas tank of Pete's Camaro causing an explosion. Luckily, Clark gets Pete out in the nick of time.
At the bar where Jonathan supposedly got drunk, Clark finds the bar tender dead and a picture on the wall that clues him in on who shot Lionel. So who shot Lionel? At the hospital another attempt is made on Lionel Luthor but nobody's there except Clark and the murderer. Clark grabs the gun away from... Sheriff Ethan. The picture on the wall was picture of the sheriff and the bartender. Apparently, Ethan, the bartender, and Jonathan all went to high school together. Ethan had faked Jonathan's blood alcohol test. He also planted the gun on Jonathan and had the bartender drug Jonathan at the bar that night.
But why? Lionel needed the sheriff to dig up dirt on the members of the board of Lex's company. Dirt which the sheriff provided for money, which put him under the thumb of Lionel Luthor. A place that was unacceptable for the sheriff.
