Lana investigates the death of her Aunt Louise which happened in 1961. She discovers a drawing that looks like Clark from 1961 who turns out to be Clark's father Jor-el. Jor-el was sent to Earth as a kind of lesson.
In the cave with Kryptonian symbols, Clark finds a sort of digital diary that enables him to see the past when touching people or objects that were involved with the 1961 mystery. Clark discovers that Lana's Aunt was having an affair with Jor-el in Smallville. He discovers that Louise was murdered by Lex Luthor's grandfather and the of Smallville deputy Billy Tate now mayor of Smallville. (William B. Davis AKA the cigarette smoking man for X-file fans) Luthor was attempting to shoot Jor-el but the bullets bounced off one of which hit Louise killing her.
Lex Luthor discovers his father Lionel lost his parents in an fire years before, and has strong suspicions that Lionel is guilty of murder. Jor-el or Joe the drifter as he was known to the people of Smallville ran away being accused of Louise's murder. Interestingly he ran into the Kent farm where he met Jonathan's father. Grandpa Kent told Joe that if there was anything he ever needed to ask him. The episode ends with Clark wondering if Jonathan and Martha Kent were chosen to be his parents by Jor-el. Music from Relic
