I really dont like the costume but lets see how the new guy gonna carry it.

I'm not crazy about the costume either, but like you say let's see how the new guy does. A lot have been bashing him and we haven't even seen him act yet.

I positively don't like the darker look. I think they need to stick with the original red yellow and blue. And they need to go back to the bigger superman emblem on his chest.

I understand that we all have to move with times but the new suit should be changed because the "S" is definely to small and the suit too much like the bad Superman in Superman 3. The new "S" looks like a cross between Christopher Reeve's and Dean Cain's "S" which is just something new. The red needs to be like fire engine RED, the blue, the boots, the cape on the neck line, the "s" on the belt are OK but the shorts are a little to brief. The choice of actor is pretty good because in the Australian newpapers we caught a glimpse of Brandon Routh as Clark Kent and the resemblence to Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent was just scary(April 10 or 17 issue of Sunday Mail, Qld). With regards to Tom Welling in the part my understanding is that he never wants to wear the suit that was what he agreed upon before taking on the role of a young Clark Kent.

the suit looks like a partially blind person made it.don't destroy the american image
Posted:  03 Jul 2005 04:06
okay, Chest logo does need to be bigger, red is wrong color, and I think that the producers could pull off giving superman some "seen" musculature as done in spiderman.  Now days, most movies show muscles to indicate how strong a character is, plus it might spice up the costume a little bit, it just looks sort of bland right now, eh?
Posted:  10 Jul 2005 15:11
Suggestion:Bigger S, bigger than the original. The new belt with S on it is not working 4 me, the original is better...and more practical and pls pump some muscle on the suit so  the new Sman looks stronger and better than other heroes...check out spiderman's muscles,we dont want supes to be left out.
Posted:  12 Jul 2005 00:48
it sucks.  i say we start a petition for them to change it.
Posted:  15 Jul 2005 06:10
first of all, why do the new movies about old superhero's all have to be "modernized?"  the suit christopher reeves had on (which was also a change from the original) would work fine for the movie.

yeah!

Amen!!!

Here's the thing, and this is coming from an old-school Supes reader/collector but not obsessive fan (I was always more of a Batman guy anyway):

If anything is wrong with the costume, it's that it makes no sense. Not that it's not accurate to the comics, not that it's too "this" or too "that." Honestly, let's think about this -- Bryan Singer knew that the X-Men, as a team of mutants battling to protect mankind -- would unlikely be dressed in bizarre spandex costumes with bold colors and impractical decorations (like Wolverine's shoulder plates). However, he took the most recent version of a "standardized" costume from the comics (the type Cyclops wore) and made it work as a protective and identifying uniform/body armor for the whole team.

Now, when we talk about the classic, bright red-blue-yellow Superman costume, we're talking about something that makes no practical sense. It's not like Captain America, where he is commissioned by and representing the USA, therefore garbed in a propagandist costume. No, Superman is an alien from another planet, given great powers by birth and great sense of duty and moral righteousness by his adoptive parents. The best explanation for his costume's origin was the "S" as a family crest, not actually an "S", but an icon, something found in his rocket ship cradle.

It would make sense that he would adopt a costume to disguise his identity (although, we all know that Superman is the REAL man and Kent is the disguise, but anyway ...). It would also make sense that he would incorporate the "S" icon into the costume, especially after being dubbed a "Superman" by the media (if you follow the John Byrne version of his origin). I can even go with the cape, something he might add for dramatic effect to intimidate criminals and his enemies. BUT I have never understood the reason for the trunks/shorts/undies on the outside. It's senseless. It's an archaic comic book gimmick that NEVER looks right outside of the funny pages.

So ... in my opinion, Singer's mistake is not only in getting the colors/cuts wrong on the costume, but for even trying to match the comic version so closely. I know, all you Superman fans out there want the exact, iconic version on screen. But you have to admit that, especially in this age of hit-or-miss comic adaptations, some concessions must be made to remove campiness from the movie versions. Ideally? A streamlined, bold (and somewhat darker) blue costume, large iconic "S" logo on the chest, regal, flowing cape (though I still hate capes on all super heroes except Batman, where his serves practical/fearful purpose. The cape should be easily detached for free-flowing ass-kicking), and yes -- that hair should never be gelled unless he's in "Clark" mode. That was one Christopher Reeve notion I could do without. The hair should always be in motion, loose, like -- well, yeah -- Tom Welling on Smallville.

Wow. I didn't even know I had an opinion on this stuff until today. Yay!

Vegasinsight you are welcome to your opinion but you are a Batman so you don't know how much it offends us, Superman fans, when we see our favourite superhero changed and not to our liking. I mean when they altered Batman they made him better but now that Bryan Singer has changed Superman the way he did and made his costume darker it alters the type of superhero he is. Batman is the "Dark Knight" and a vigilante superhero but Superman is the "Man of Steel" and a symbol light and hope for all of us. So from all of us SUPERMAN fans we would like to see his costume with a brighter red and a bigger "S".

I agree, the thing is if your going to make a movie about Superman, he's got to look like Superman. If not call it something else and make a movie about another character one that doesn't have a costume.

everyone is hating on the costume, i dont think its that bad, like if they made it bright blue and red, it would look gay, same with x men, if they made all the costumes the bright colours of the original cartoon and such it just wouldnt work, they made it dark maroon to give it more of a "real" feel to the costume, like i said its not the best, but its also very hard to make supermans costume look cool due to the colours being very kiddy in a way
Posted:  21 Jul 2005 03:45
Yeah, but the shorts look more like panties though, they're so dang short. Other than that I guess we'll have to live with it. I like the original colors better though their a part of Americana.

yeah i hear what everyone is saying, i still the better Superman costume is from Lois and Clark, is cheesy, but it still sticks to the roots
Posted:  27 Jul 2005 20:09
I agree with everyone who hates it and wishes to keep the original just the way it is( The Christopher Reeve costume). I want to see the character of superman in a new story, a new adventure not a new character with a new story. The important thing is to see the superman we all love doing what he does without having to complain everytime we see him in the costume and turning our head in disgust and disappointment. As to the guy, I too prefer to see Tom Welling as superman.

I don't get what the problem with Dean Cain's suit is, I mean at least people who made Lois and Clark stuck with a better colour scheme. A lot of people have had a say as to their opinion about the new costume but the one thing about the costume that stands out for me is it looks like the costume from the Lois and Clark pilot, with less brighter colours. To anyone who has the pilot you should have a look at it closely and notice how small the "S" is and how small the briefs are because I think this is where they got the basic look of the new costume from. At least the L and C people had enough sense to make some improvements after the pilot.

If were gonna base supes costume to superheroes costume of today such as the Xmen's,I think that supes red brief and boots should go w/c makes his suit all blue w large S and red cape. More like the Eradicator suit in the comicbook. It appears more like a uniform than a cheesy costume right? What do you think of this idea guys?
Posted:  29 Jul 2005 02:29
nah, they cant get a simple blue and red suit right, to try to make it like Eradicator would confuse them to death
Posted:  01 Aug 2005 21:13
While i am glad they stuck with a basic design Singer NEEDS to make a few changes.

1. The symbol needs to be a little bit larger

2. all of the red on the outfit needs to be brighter not this dark red color. Superman is not a dark character he is a symbol of hope.

3.The cape needs to be more prominant on the shoulders.

Basically Singer needs to look at the old movies and the new comics, that is the outfit that we've all grown to love and that is the costume that needs to be in this movie, Singer is just trying to do what he did with the XMEN where he completely changed the outfits that they wore. THE SUPERMAN OUTFIT DOESN'T NEED TO BE CHANGED.
Posted:  05 Aug 2005 05:24
Well, i guess your right... you wont see superman if you change his costume lets just hope that the new Sman can deliver...or else we're not gonna see the man of steel for another century when this movie fails to satisfy US fans as well as movie goers around the globe.

I must be the only one who loves the new costume.  For me, it is evocative of the original comic books, even though it is darker and doesn't "look exactly that way", it's still what it reminds me of.  I think the Speedo look is way better than the granny panties look too.   In a still picture, I like the coloring, but I'll have to see how it works in action to ultimately decide.
I am interested to note how many people refer to the Chris Reeve version as the "original" version.
Posted:  12 Aug 2005 16:49
Probably a lot of people who grew up on the movie. It was the best version of all time.

It is just me or does anyone think that WB could do themselves a favour by releasing more shots from the movie then just the one we have. I mean the angle of the shot doesn't do us or them or Brandon any justice because it is from such a low angle and if anyone was to put Chris' or Dean's or Tom's face on that same shot in that same suit then I don't think any of them would look the part.
Posted:  31 Aug 2005 16:08
I saw so more pics of Brandon on his official site - brandonrouth.com, and the suit didn't look all that great there either. Well it looks like it might be ok in action sequences, but just standing there. The S is just too small and the colors too dark etc. Dude at least needs to lift weights the way that Reeve did for the role. I mean if he didn't look so dang skinny he might look more like Superman.

Now is just me or does Brandon look like Scott Baio from Happy days and Charles in Charge fame. He is a different type of build to Chris, I mean trust I am a personal trainer so I see different body types all the time. He is longer in the waist and the limbs than Chris so I don't think we can make any jugdement calls until we see him in action. I wonder, in an effort to appease the ladies eyes and some mens eyes, if they will have him in a scene without his shirt on. They did it with Dean and they do it with Tom.

He needs to lift weights though. He does sorta look like someone from Happy Days. Dude that's funny. Maybe a little more like Potsy though.
