SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Superman Returns Movie / Superman Costume

Well...I am an avid fan of the Superman character and remember, as a kid in the early sixties, watching the reruns of the 50's George Reeves' Superman TV series.  The first year/season of episodes from this series, were to me, better than anything discussed here in this forum.  To many Superman fans, including me...George Reeves remains the true SUPERMAN.  But, when Christopher Reeve came along...I could embrace his portrayal of the "Man of Steel" in the four Superman movies he made and accept him as Superman and his portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman.  I really like his look in Superman II...where the color of his uniform changed when he was affected by red kyrptonite...it was very close to that of the Brandon Routh costume...which I think looks really great.  Deeper red as opposed to bright red always looks better...in my opinion.  I liked the Lois & Clark series very much...but the Dean Cain's dark blue was bothersome to me...but still the essence of Superman was there.  The costume design for "Superman Returns" to me is just fine...I like the muted colors...and the essence of Superman is not at all affected by what are trival changes...and ones I find refreshing....and I for one, am really tired of the "Gay" thing.  Mr. Singer's sexual orientation may or may not have had impact on the look of "New" Superman costume...so what if it did...fine...from what I've seen in the trailers and pics from the set..."Superman Returns" looks like it could be good...we'll all find out in June.  There have always been changes in the Superman cotume design...none of them including "Superman Returns" has hurt or damaged the
Superman image.  Brandon Routh's uniform "tightness" is no different than Christopher Reeve's or Dean Cain's...the Superman uniform is skin tight...that's part of the "Tradition" of the character...the FICTIONAL character.

On another related tangent...Tom Welling...I don't know why everyone feels he should be the successor of Christopher Reeve and should play the new role of S-man in "Superman Returns"...he refuses to wear the costume...that disqualifies him in my opinion. The uniform is part of the character and he doesn't hold a candle to any one of the former actors who've portrayed this wonderful role of Superman...from Dean Cain all the way back to Kirk Alyn.  As others in this forum have said...Tom is great portraying  a teenager going into manhood as Clark Kent...dealing with the struggle of these awesome SuperPowers and normal life.  Leave Tom Welling in Smallville...he doesn't belong in Metropolis.

Welcome dude, or should i say sir, to the site goathereder. referring to your post, i agree with the things said 'bout Tom, but i think brandon is a good enough dude to play supes. i also think Tom would do good in Metropolis.

Thanks for the welcome Pinoyman.  The thing about Tom Welling...is that the Smallville show is more about Clark Kent as a teenager and what, as a teenager, he has to deal with as his Superpowers evolve and develop.  The show's theme is about that...it's not about, to me...Superman. That's not to say that the angle the show's theme takes is not worthy or well done...I can't really say...because I only saw one or two episodes in the first season...but the premise is different...and that's all right. I just don't consider it full circle or totally true to the Superman character...it's only about part of his persona.  But some of the members just go on about Tom Welling like he's the ONLY one that should and could possibly play the role of Superman in "Superman Returns"...and he's not.  He also, isn't Christopher Reeve either.  These members just tear down the new movie and Brandon Routh...because of minor alterations to the Superman uniform.  The movie could be a huge success...and none of us, who are true Superman fans, can speak to that until it premieres in June.

Very well said goatherder and I hope I don't upest you in any way but it was Superman III in which his suit became darker after being exposed to the "funny" kryptonite. I agree and I think it the most defining reason for Tom not being cast as superman in the new movie because of the fact that he doesn't want to wear the suit. I like Brandon in the role and besides they have changed too much of the storyline of superman in Smallville to have Tom in the role as far as I am concerned. Brandon will never replace Chris only to succeed him in the role and bring a whole new generation of kids to the magic that is SUPERMAN.

Thanks Superjon for the correction about Superman II & III...after I posted, I wondered if I had the right sequence of movie.  Not upset at all...appreciate the correction.  This is just my opinion...George Reeves, the 50's Superman, was a truly wonderful man...and the things he personally did for members of the cast and crew...commanded great respect...and he did a fantastic job in his role as Clark Kent/Superman as well.  He unfortunately paid a great price career wise.  But nonetheless, as stated earlier....HE is, by many, considered the true SUPERMAN. Then there's Christopher Reeve...and he played the role slightly differently...but the movies were really great.  He too, was a fantastic man.  I was so hoping he'd walk again after the accident...but as we sadly know, he died. So, I feel that George Reeves...the first GREAT TV Superman and Christopher Reeve...the actual first movie Superman, are the two icons that brought this fictional comic book character to life, in ways that will never, NEVER be matched.

whoa, you and superjon will get along well

It's very nice to have you on the board, goatherder. I think that Brandon will hold the legacy of former Superman actors. He's a good man. And he means as much to the city of Des Moines (and all of the suburbs, like his hometown of Norwalk) as Superman means to Metropolis. And... uh... I mean the fictional Metropolis, not Metropolis, IL.

The more I look at the costume, the more I like it. I'm still not wild about the S/. But I am liking the colors.

finally, a person with an open mind. i agree with you 100%
Posted:  16 Mar 2006 08:30
No worries goatherder, happy to be of assistance. Well then Pinoyman does that mean we are all in agreeance about agreeing.

Thanks rabbitspam for your kind welcome. Everybody here seems so nice and "reasonable" in opinions...even if there's differences here and there. I wasn't trying to discredit the other actors that have portrayed Superman when I stated the opinion that George Reeves and Christopher Reeve brought something to their performances that could never be matched...it's just that these two actors are, in many ways, iconic in their Superman roles...at least to me.  I loved Dean Cain's Superman and the "Lois & CLark" show...although the Martha Kent role was a little to much to stomach sometimes.  I think Brandon Routh looks just awesome as Superman...and I think his Superman costume...is fantastic....nothing has been compromised in terms of the elements of the Superman costume...because of a neckline or cut of briefs, the size of an "S" or depth of color.  And again, from the pics...the movie looks like it could be a tremendous hit.  I really hope it is and that it has all round quality in the story it tells...so several more films about Superman will follow.  You know it would be great if HBO did a Superman series...that was of the quality of the 50's Superman TV series...particularly the first season and even the second season...but have it set in the 1940's...but with todays technology and special effects.  I think that would be fantastic to see...especially if it was very well written and performed.  If only I was a producer  instead of a goatherder!

That was what I found impressive, and I’m sure you couldn't have guessed that I was being sarcastic...

Without meeting her in person goatherder how would you know she has a small mind? I mean I know they say that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but you're the one who answered the question about his nickname. You could have lied and made something up, like you had just been watching the Discovery Channel. Think about, you're the one that could have posted yourself by your real first name or something that didn't leave people wondering about your, lack of, social life or strange private life.

Thank you superjon that is if you were defending me... If you don't mind me asking what are you talking about and are you talking to me or goatherder??? And whats up with "discovery channel".... Could you please be more specific.

Your a very complex person...

I like the blue shade, but where the hell is the red?! What happened to the yellow "S" on the cape? And what's with the "short" shorts? The "S" on the chest would have looked cooler if it was as big as it was in the original Christopher Reeve costume. The Superman costume has always been a living american flag to me. Leather cape instead of cloth or cotton?(THEY SHOULD HAVE USED THE ORIGINAL COSTUME. PERIOD) Look i like Brandon Routh i think he was a great choice, let's face it, it's hard to cast a character as iconic as Superman. I am looking forward to the movie, as much as we dislike the costume, i feel this movie will rule.

superjon, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but for some reason when I read your posts I picture Locke from ABC's lost. No offense or anything, seriously Locke is cool. Besides Smallville, Lost is one of my favorite shows.

Kavitha, I think superjon was defending you.

versus, you have very valid points about the costume. I'm not crazy about the leather cape either. Superman's cape has to flow freely in the wind. I can't wait to see the movie. I can't guarantee it will be good, but I can't wait to find out one way or the other.

Kavitha...I owe you an apology...because I gave you more credit than you deserved.

Superjon...How can I say someone I haven't met has a small mind...by the things they write...rude, sarcasticly written comments....aimed at insulting and putting someone down...unprovoked.  That's how.  Go back in recent days and see who, first, injected their caustic attitude to the mix here.

And Superjon...instead of questioning my "small mind" comment...why don't you look within yourself and question...how you can critique someone...who YOU NEVER MET...as having a lack of a social life or strange private life...based on nothing more than the fact that person has two goats?  At least goats are REAL...SUPERMAN is FICTIONAL!!

Being a Superman fan...I came into this forum wanting to see other peoples opinions about this fictional icon and the upcoming NEW movie...and to share mine...and to engage in what I thought was going to be enjoyable debate...well, it's NOT fun anymore!!
