PROLOGUE
Krypton, City of Kandor
Kor-El ran his fingers over the star-map. It wasn’t as grand as the maps in the Hall of Worlds, but he wanted another glimpse, wondering where he would go for his upcoming trip. Though he worked in security, Exploring planets was another passion of his. He was the oldest of two brothers, Jor-El and Nim-El who were twins, no more than a year old.
Kor-El rubbed the bridge of his nose, wondering why it was so quiet. This bothered him. They were on a world-wide security alert. Tor-En had made an illegal announcement, telling his fellow Kryptonians that if his demands were not met, he would set off a series of bombs and destroy Kryptonopolis. So rare were crimes on Krypton, that most thought it was a joke, others simply shook their heads in disbelief. Even so, they had to take the threat seriously, putting all Security forces on alert.
Boredom starting to set in, Kor-El opened the view screen to Police Chief Tar-Gan. He could only stare at the screen for a moment, before rushing to the nearest weapons locker. On the screen charred mounds of dead flesh stared silently back.
“They can’t be all dead, they can’t.” He mumbled, quickly opening one of the hatches. He suddenly realized the security codes had been dismantled, but only too late as a gun was met in his face.
“Looks like we missed one.” One of the thugs greeted, ready to shoot him.
“Wait.” An older man that Kor-El recognized from the video stepped forward, “We can use him to open the main weapons locker.”
“Tor-En.” Kor-El frowned, “You won’t get away with this.”
“A bit young to be with the security forces aren’t you?” Tor-En smiled, then nodded towards his men who raised their weapons at him.
“Let’s go.” Tor-En ordered, pushing the youth ahead.
Kor-El remained silent, his mind raced for answers that did not come. He had no choice but to obey the man.
“Start loading the shuttlecrafts.” Tor-En ordered after reaching their destination. Kor-El tried moving slowly to buy time, but to no avail. After they were finishing up, one of Tor-En’s thugs rushed over with news.
“Outside security forces have been alerted to our presence and are on their way.”
Tor-En’s face twisted as he turned on Kor-El.
“You!” He hissed, his face muscles twisted as he brought the gun up and brought it down over the young man’s head. Kor-El collapsed to the stone floor.
“Put him in my shuttle, I’ll use him to help get away. The rest of you split off and separate.” Tor-En kicked the unconscious form of Kor-El.
Kor-El awoke, his head felt like it would split. He tried to move but realized he was bound and gagged. Loosing track of time, eventually the shuttle landed, but where, Kor-El had no idea. Tor-En’s bodyguard Jak-Ur moved towards Kor-El threateningly.
“As soon as I’m safely away, kill him.” Tor-En ordered.
Kor-El’s eyes locked with the thug as Jak-Ur cut his bound legs free, while pointing the gun with the other. Once Tor-En was out of site, Kor-El took the opportunity to kick the man in the face, knocking the gun away. Kor-El moved quickly, but Jak-Ur rammed against him, and Kor-El felt the wind knocked out of him. The thug went scrambling for the gun, and Kor-El took the opportunity to run into the empty warehouse.
Empty boxes and crates filled the place, and Kor-El hid behind one of them. Working quickly and quietly, Kor-El managed to untie his bound hands and free his mouth.
Jak-Ur pointed the gun ahead, trying to locate the missing target. Kor-El located a loose metal pipe not too far ahead and moved towards it. The man stopped, listening and Kor-El used that moment to bring it around as Jak-Ur turned a corner, smashing into the man’s face.
Kor-El reached down to make sure the man was alive and he was. Taking the gun from the unconscious man, he rushed through the rooms, before Tor-En could escape. Once he reached outside, several fuel tanks lined the road and he spotted Tor-En arguing with a woman and a child.
“I told you to wait at my brother Mag-En’s house.” Tor-En explained to her. The woman looked back at him with stubbornness.
“I don’t know what has been going on with you Tor-En but there are rumors of a threat.”
“It’s for the greater good, now please go back and I will call for you when it is safe.” He reasoned.
She answered him with more silence and turned to her son. “Dor-En, get in the shuttlecraft.”
“Who’s that?” The small boy pointed.
Tor-En’s eyes went wide and grabbed the gun he had on him. Kor-El reacted without thinking and fired. He hit the fuel tank, the explosion knocked him back. When he got up, security forces were swarming the area, and Tor-En was being arrested. He felt strong arms pull him up, asking if he was ok. Tor-En’s wife and child had been killed in the explosion.
Tor-En’s face was a mask of rage, rarely felt or seen on Krypton.
“You’ll pay for this boy.” Was his last threat before being pushed inside the security shuttle.
