The history of the Fortress of Solitude, as printed on this site (http://www.supermantv.net/articles/fortress.htm), is very comprehensive, but there is one minor error I would like to set straight. Lois & Clark did in fact mention a "Fortress of Solitude", but it was not the way that most fans would think.
Some people might point to the short discussion about where Superman is, between Lois and Clark during the pilot episode, as a minor hint to the FoS - they say he could be at the North Pole for all they know. However, in Season 1, Episode 16 "Foundling", Clark interacts with the message globe from his Kryptonian crib ship and at the end of the episode he tells Lois that he's sure Superman put it someplace safe. We then se Pa Kent climbing down from a treehouse in the Kent's backyard. Hanging on the door of the treehouse is a crooked sign written in kiddyscratch, saying simply "Fortress of Solitude".
Interestingly enough, since the globe is the mechanism that Jor-El uses to communicate with Kal-El on Lois & Clark, this humorous revision of the FoS setting still allows Kal-El to be alone somewhere and learn from Jor-El.
I did get this information from reviewing my copies of L&C, but there is also additional info about the FoS (especially the comic book kind) at http://theages.superman.ws/Encyclopaedia/Fortress/history.php .
