SupermanTV.net Forum / Superman / Christopher Reeve Movies / Superman 2 Richard Donner Cut Review

Just got the movie last night and it was great! They did a marvelous job piecing together the movie. You have to see the extras to really admire the work that went into this.

Buy Richard Donner Cut from Amazon

The first scene with Lois and Clark was one of the best. Clark does a superspeed number to save Lois and it worked perfectly, better than the original Superman II's version where Clark saves Lois from drowning.

I felt like a kid again watching Superman II for the first time. The addition of Jor-El was just awesome. It helped bring back some of the emotions from Superman the movie that had gotten lost originally.

There are quite a lot of surprises in the movie. There are a couple of new things in the Metropolis Phantom Zone villains battle we all know and love, and the ending just may catch you by complete surprise.

The only negative and to be honest it didn't bother me was the fact that in one key scene the only film they had available to use was a screen test so you'll see Clark with long hair in one spot and Clark Kent slicked back hair in the next second. It's completely understandable that they would use this scene. You could tell from listening to Richard Donner in the extras that this scene meant a lot to him. You can tell he really wishes he could have made more movies with Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and the rest. I have to wonder if he had, would Gene Hackman had been in Superman III? Would Marlon Brando had done more Jor-El scenes for the Fortress of Solitude?

The best reason to buy this movie is to, if nothing else, to see Christopher Reeve play Superman again. It's almost like seeing a new movie. You have to remind yourself that Reeve is no longer with us. I think the making of the Richard Donner Cut is the greatest tribute the film industry could have given to Reeve. There is one scene in particular between Reeve and Brando in the Fortress that will give chills to anybody who grew up watching Christopher Reeve as Superman. It's almost like riding into a time machine and seeing the movie all for the first time as a kid again.

I highly recommend this DVD for all Superman and Christopher Reeve fans. It's a must have for your collection!

Here's our Richard Donner Cut Order page where you can order the movie from Amazon and help support our site.

Tim I got Superman Returns and Superman 2 The Donner's Cut as a Birthday present yesterday, and yes  I also felt so like a kid again watching this movie. Seeing Brando in the movie was so right and should have never been taken out of the movie in the first place, but we all know why.

I am very glad it was put back in the Donner's Cut. The scene you mention that was from a screen test. Notice Chris's glasses how they change in style from scene to scene. As you watch the doc about Superman 2, both Superman movies where filmed simultaneously. If they were filming Superman 1 scenes that day at the Daily Planet after they finished. They started filming on Superman 2 scenes.  It's all good anyway!

So watch this Cut of Superman 2 and you love it!

Oh and another thing, back when Superman went back to the fortress to get back his super powers. Watch, when you see how he gets them back. Watch how it looks so familiar from last season of Smallville, you'll all know what I mean when you watch this scene.

I'll be watching Superman Returns on DVD probably around Sunday night.

The Donner cut reminded a lot of Smallville. I'll bet even though they tried to make the effects resemble something that was in existence in the 1970's that the same basic effects were used on the movie as on Smallville. Take the superspeed Clark rushing to save Lois. That effect was just like Smallville without a doubt.

I am definitely getting this DVD as soon as possible, hopefully as part of the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD. This film and the Ultimate Edtion set pay equal tribute to both Christopher Reeve and Richard Donner. Donner did an amazing job with the first film, so hopefully this film is just as good.

The Richard Donner Cut is so much better then the original Superman 2 movie. It's more like the uperman movie should have been. Richard did great job with his cut epically by going back and finding all the "thought lost" footage he had from the first 2 movies. I gotta say though, anytime I re watch all the original movies I watch the Donner cut first then watch the other one.
