The only thing that links this movie to anything that was good in the Chris Reeve movies is the music score and Marlon Brando. Take away all that and you end up with just another TV Crime Drama with the same animated special effects used in the Peter Pan movie. As a matter of fact if you combine Peter Pan, Pirates of the Carribean, Damien:Omen II, and others you end up with a movie like that...er..oh and throw in a video game like animated version of Brandon dressed in a knockoff Superman outfit.
What we see is a Clark Kent who resembles a Peter Brady who was probably friends with "Farmer Ted" in high school. Lois is completely uptight, unsure, and self centered lugging around an illegitimate child who she bred out of wedlock in her secret rendevous with Superman. Of course Superman's one who would have an unplanned pregnancy. He's all mighty and powerful, but really stupid in the sex department. Even so, he flees the earth without so much a goodbye to look for a planet Jor-El already said was destroyed. But that doesn't matter because he must only believe what he wants to hear. He must have taken a piece of the yellow sun with him to keep his powers while light years away. Who knows, since the beginning of the movie diesn't tell us why he crash landed in another 1978 ship. The ressurected Martha didn't say much about it. After being reunited with the easy-hard-easy to love Lois he decides to start spying on her family regardless of knowing that she's with a good man who wouldn't appreciate it. So at this point we have Lois and Clark who are below average compared to most Americans. This is unlike the Richard Donner film of course. I also have to mention the little doggy chewing on dog bones which is totally disgusting and unnecessary in a "good" Superman movie. Lex Luthor's sidekick reminds you of a prostitute. Oh yeah..there's real love between the cast. It's a bright movie, just like Chris Reeve's films. NOT!! This is another dark, dreary, unreal, computer animated HD film with very little quality dialog that makes us feel like we're playing an XBOX without the control. Above all I am really really disappointed that there are no producers out there that follow the same pace as excellent producers like Richard Donner. The Salkins were the number one reason why the later Reeve films were bombs and it's people like that that dominate the film industry today. Clearly the wrong director was chosen for this film and Warner needs to wake up and fire this guy and get Richard Donner to do the next one with someone other than Brandon Routh.
On a last note did anyone else notice the scene with teenage Clark running through the corn fields. It reminded me of the animated Lord of the Rings movies. Talk about jerky motion!! I can do better on my Pentium 4!!

come on--it wasn't that bad--right __________________
Nice rant cooldude11 but keep in mind that is your opinion and you are entitled to it but a lot of us disagree with you (on a lot of points). I liked it a lot because the big rescue scene with the plane at the start is the kind of thing that I want to see in a superman movie and, with all respects, the first lot of movies could never create such images that are taken straight out of a comic book just like superman himself. Also keep in mind the fact that they chose Brandon for the very reason that he looks just like Chris and I liked him in the role because he didn't act like Chris' superman or Clark but kind of made the role his own for the next generation.

Superjon I disagree, the rescue scene with the plane was a mess! SLOPPY! SLOPPY! SLOPPY! WHAT THE ?
man don't make mistakes in his rescue attempts!
SPIDERMAN does!
Why in the hell would superman grab a plane that's spinning out of control by it's wing ? You fly underneath it to halt it from spinning and dropping.
SR turn SUPERMAN into a SUPER STALKER!
OH Lois! Boo Hoo! Lois! I HATE SINGERMAN SO MUCH, I CAN'T BELIEVE that a film can upset me so What's worst and unbelievable, this movie actually made money. __________________
Interesting reading, Billy Batson. I kind of hate all the bashing of Brandon Routh in the blog though. I'm not sure he can blamed for any shortcomings fans might have with the film Superman Returns, even if you are in the Tom Welling camp.
I'd like to see another director take Welling and make a Superman movie to compare to Superman Returns. That would be interesting. I'll bet given just double their normal budget for Smallville, I'll bet the Smallville producers could pull it off.
But still I hate putting Brandon down. He seems like an allright guy to be given such a hard time. __________________
I agree with Tim as well. But I love it. I was waiting so long for this movie and even the movie news said it lived up to it's hype. I will always love this movie I mean just look at this pic. It's like one of my all time faves scenes in the movie.

The airplane scene was the best. You know I kind of wish they had saved that scene for the climax. The best scene should always go at the end. __________________
The whole stoppping a plane from crashing into the ground was done in the cartoon update fo superman that came out in about 2000 or 2001. I think that Singer wanted to see if it could be redone in a "live" action movie and besides Tim he had to get you to stay seated for the rest of the movie, didn't he?

Another scene of many that Singer stole!
SUPERMAN TAS & JLU (clash)* zero damage to plane in each rescue attempt.
Ok, if I had my way there would have been a major fight scene at the end of the movie that had never been done before maybe a giant robot terrorizing Metropolis or some super powered baddies. Major destruction, chaos, etc etc. But at the end everybody is smiling and the good old American flag is waving. That's what a perfect Superman flick should be about. Oh and somehow you have to fit all the girly love stuff in the middle for all the female fans and to make the characters seem real. Action and human emotion must go hand in hand to suck the audience into the movie.
You just have to put everything you can into a major blockbuster like this to satisfy fans that wait forever.
I still liked the movie but I just have my own ideas of what should have been included. I would have subtracted a lot of the talking. Too much yacking for a superhero flick.
Now I just saw Rocky Balboa and it was great even though 80 percent of it was yacking because it's not a superhero movie for one which meant it could get away with it and two it used the dialogue to effectively yank on your heart strings. Mainly it brought back old memories. __________________

Oh I love it!
Man, if Jude Law didn't turn down the role of General Zod. They might have had a awesome fight scene at the end of the movie, But Law refused the role and the script was re-written. In Superman movies we need BIG things to happen in them!

To relate to the Airplane sceene, it is payin homage to the comic book. Where Superman saves Lois from the free fall of the Space Shuttle Constitution. Thats what it is doing. I also liked how Brian Singer had a lot of the mythological things about Superman in the movie. And Kevin Spacey as Lex was briliant. He played a good Lex. I don't think that they should bring Zod into the movies again, even though Richard Donner had them return to the Phantom Zone in his cut of Superman 2. It would become too campy. I think that they should have Brainiac or Bizaro or Metallo or some other huge villian other than Zod. Superman in recent years has had toned down powers. Which in my opinion is good. It shows that he is not that all powerful. Thank you, I have said my peace.

I think Zod would be fine as long as we get a modern day Zod suitable for today's advanced effects.
Bizarro would be cool, but his backwards talk drives me crazy and he's not usually completely evil just dumber than a box of rocks. Braniac might be ok, but I kind of would like to stay away from Kryptonited Metallo. It's too easy for a villain to pull out some Green K and Supes is down for the count until Lois or Jimmy saves him. Been done too many times. I want a knockdown drag out fight worthy of today's special effects that lasts half or more of the movie.
Maybe Braniac could cause major devastation over the U.S where Supes has to save the day performing amazing feats of strength while Zod or Bizzarro brings the ultimate slug fest at the end. I hope they make Superman like a Star Wars movie. There is no reason why a Superman movie should not wow an audience all the way through. Maybe Zod and Braniac could bring an entire fleet of evil robotic soldiers in thousands of spaceships determined to take over the world. __________________

I just skimmed over a couple posts,
Quote: man don't make mistakes in his rescue attempts!
SPIDERMAN does!
dude, everyone makes mistakes, even the best, it's the smart people who ask for help.
obviously, by the rest of your post, you've never truly been in love before otherwise you'd know what supes goes through, all he can do is look at the woman he loves.
superjon, Superman saves planes, trains, boats, and a number of other vehicles, not one thing is taken from another in my view.
Quote: Another scene of many that Singer stole
technically he can't steal it, since saving people in any type of transportational device is a logo for superman
Quote: And Kevin Spacey as Lex was briliant.
completely agree __________________

I would love to see Jax-Ur & Mala brought to the next SUPERMAN Movie franchise,Along with Lord Darkseid.
Darkseid and the High Father story Arch from TAS can provide that Star Wars feel that Tim is looking for. __________________

i am not a supe but i know how he feels! AMEN!! __________________
How about this for an idea with regards to teh villian in the next movie. They could have Lex create Metallo with superman disabling him then Brainiac take over the body. It would make for a better final fight scene than S2, if they did it right!

Only if we can get Metallo with no Kryptonite. I want a full fledged fight with no excuses for Superman to go all out. __________________
