NJ to name new stem cell facility for Reeve
December 21, 2006, 4:46 PM EST
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ New Jersey's stem cell research institute will be named for Christopher Reeve, a New Jersey native who promoted stem cell research after he was paralyzed in a 1995 horse riding accident.
Anthony Coley, a spokesman for Gov. Jon S. Corzine, said the governor will honor the naming request made by Senate President Richard J. Codey.
Codey asked the governor Thursday to name the institute planned for Rutgers University in New Brunswick for Reeve, who worked with Codey to pass stem cell research laws in New Jersey.
Corzine on Wednesday signed into law a bill providing $270 million for New Jersey stem cell research facilities, including $150 million for the institute.
Reeve died in 2004 at age 52. He was born in Princeton Borough, and testified in favor of stem cell research during 2002 hearings on the issue in New Jersey.
"Christopher was with us at the genesis of this journey and although he cannot be with us now, I believe this would be the most fitting way to honor his dream," Codey said.
